Resolving conflicts
There are three things you can dotoresolve hardware conflicts:
q Disable the device.
For an older device, remove it from the computer. For aPlug and Play device, see "Fixing
aproblem with Device Manager".
q Disable another system component and use its resources for the new device.

q Reconfigure the device so that its requirements donot conflict.
Refer tothe device's documentation for instructions about changing settings onthe device.
Fixing aproblem with Device Manager
Device Manager provides away tocheck and change the configuration of adevice.
Changing the default settings using Device Manager can cause other conflicts that make one or
more devices unusable. Device Manager is aconfiguration tool for advanced users who
understand configuration parameters and the ramifications of changing them.
Disabling adevice in Windows
1.Click the My Computer icon with the secondary button, then click Properties.
2.Click the Device Manager tab.
3.Double- click the device type todisplay the device installed.
4.Select the device and click Properties.
A dialog box displays the device's properties.
5.In the Device usage section of the dialog box, clear the check box next tothe current
configuration.
6.Click OK.
Checking device properties
Device Manager (not afeature of Windows NT) provides away toview the properties of adevice.
Properties include the name of the manufacturer, the type of device, the drivers installed, and the
system resources assigned tothe device.
1.Click the My Computer icon with the secondary button, then click Properties.
2.Click the Device Manager tab.
3.To view the device(s) installed, double- click the device type.
4.To view the properties, double- click the device.
Windows95displays the Device Properties dialog box, which provides various tabs:
q The General tab provides basic information about the device.
q The Resources tab lists the resources assigned tothe device. If you have adevice
conflict, it is shown in the Conflicting device list.
q The Drivers tab displays the drivers being used by the device.
