Controls Product Overview Engine On/Off Switch Use the engine On/Off switch to shut the engine off. Ensure that the switch is in the ON position before starting the engine. Fuel-Valve Lever Move the lever for the fuel valve to the ON position before attempting to start the engine. After operation, shut off the engine and move the fuel-valve lever to the OFF position. Throttle Control The throttle controls the engine speed, and it has a continuous-variable setting.
Drive-Control Levers • Drive: Only the wheels are engaged with the engine; the tines are disengaged. Use this mode for powered transportation when driving up steep inclines and moving the machine to and from your garden. Pull down the forward lever to engage the transmission in the forward direction; pull up on the reverse lever to engage the transmission in the reverse direction. Release the levers to disengage the transmission.
Operation • Do not fill the fuel tank indoors. • Do not overfill the fuel tank. Replace the fuel cap and tighten it securely after fueling. Clean up spilled fuel before starting the engine. Note: Determine the left and right sides of the machine from the normal operating position. • Do not fill containers inside a vehicle or on a truck or trailer bed with a plastic liner. Always place containers on the ground, away from the vehicle before filling.
Adding Fuel Filling the Fuel Tank Fill the fuel tank as shown in Figure 20. Fuel Specifications Type Unleaded gasoline Minimum octane rating 87 (US) or 91 (research octane; outside the US) Ethanol No more than 10% by volume Methanol None MTBE (methyl tertiary butyl ether) Less than 15% by volume Oil Do not add to the fuel g230458 Figure 20 Use only clean, fresh (no more than 30 days old), fuel from a reputable source.
During Operation • Do not overload the machine capacity by During Operation Safety • Do not pick up or carry a machine while the engine General Safety • Exercise caution and be sure of your footing, attempting to till or cultivate too deep and at too fast a rate. is running. especially when backing up, to avoid slipping or falling. • Use your full attention while operating the machine. Do not engage in any activity that causes distractions; otherwise, injury or property damage may occur.
Starting the Machine Adjusting the Drag Stake 1. Move the engine on/off switch to the ON position. Adjust the drag stake as needed for the drive mode. 2. Move the fuel-valve lever to the OPEN position. • CRT mode: The drag stake helps regulate tilling 3. Move the throttle lever to the FAST position. 4. Move the choke lever to the CHOKE position. depth during CRT mode. Lower the drag stake to reduce the tilling depth; raise the drag stake to increase the tilling depth.
Operating Tips • Inspect the area where you will use the machine and remove all objects such as large rocks, trash, and branches before tilling to prevent equipment damage. • Do not place excessive body weight on the machine. Use the weight of the machine to till the soil more efficiently. • When tilling, begin with a shallow cut on the first pass and then increase the depth by 2.5 to 5.1 cm (1 to 2 inches) on each successful path until you reach the desired depth.
Maintenance • Never tamper with safety devices. Check their Maintenance Safety • To ensure optimum performance of the machine, proper operation regularly. use only genuine Toro replacement parts and accessories. Replacement parts and accessories made by other manufacturers could be dangerous, and such use could void the product warranty.
