•Chargethebatteryinanopen,well-ventilated
area,awayfromsparksandames.Unplugthe
chargerbeforeconnectingordisconnectingthe
battery.Wearprotectiveclothinganduseinsulated
tools.

Jump-StartingtheMachine
1.Removeanycorrosionfromthebattery
terminals,andensurethattheconnectionsare
tightbeforejump-startingthemachine.
Important:Corrosionorlooseconnections
cancauseunwantedelectricalvoltage
spikesatanytimeduringthejump-starting
procedure,whichcoulddamagetheengine.
Donotattempttojump-startthemachineif
thebatteryterminalsarelooseorcorroded.
DANGER
Jump-startingaweakbatterythatis
crackedorfrozen,orhasalowelectrolyte
leveloranopen/shortedbatterycell,can
causeanexplosionresultinginserious
personalinjury.
Donotjump-startaweakbatteryifthese
conditionsexist.
2.Ensurethattheboosterbatteryisagood,fully
chargedlead-acidbatterywithatleast12.6V.
Useproperlysizedjumpercableswithshort
lengthstoreducethevoltagedropbetweenthe
systems.Makesurethatthecablesarecolor
codedorlabeledforthecorrectpolarity.
Note:Besurethattheventcapsaretightand
level.Placeadampcloth,ifavailable,overthe
ventcapsoneachbattery.Besurethatthe
machinesdonottouchandthatbothelectrical
systemsareturnedoffandhavethesamerated
systemvoltage.Theseinstructionsarefor
negative-groundsystemsonly.
3.Connectthepositive(+)cabletothepositive(+)
terminalofthedischargedbatterythatiswired
tothestarterorsolenoidasshowninFigure49.
