2. Operation
The 1070 (model 9000) is a portable decade capacitance box, housed in a robust metal
case and designed for industrial, laboratory and education requirements.
The unit incorporates a colour coding system which divides the setting into three groups:
µF = Red ηF = White ρF = Yellow
The high accuracy obtained in the 1070 is achieved by the use of accurate, stable
capacitors. A thumbwheel switch provides precision selection of output capacitance.
A multiple gold contact switch arrangement ensures that should a contact fail, there is
always a back-up contact available.
To select a value simply dial up with the digit switches.
For example - to set 2.746µF
2 on the 1µF bank
7 on the 100ηF bank
4 on the 10ηF bank
6 on the 1ηF bank
Connection to the box can be made via 4mm shrouded plugs, as well as
standard plugs, bare wires, and spade terminals
. Two connections red and
black connect to the capacitance and the grey terminal connects to the case
for screening purposes. (new model safety terminals shown).
Note: Remember that all capacitance boxes have a residual capacitance, i.e. even when
the dials are set to zero there is still a capacitance value across the output. If you are
making precision measurements or recalibrating the instrument this residual value must be
subtracted from all measurements.
