ENCORE PRO-HUNTER
APPENDIX
This appendix is a supplement to the information provided in the
preceeding Thompson/Center Encore Magnum Muzzleloader
Safety and Instruction Manual. The appendix applies to the spe-
cific differences in operation for the Speed Breech™ and the
Swing Hammer™.
Use & Care of the Thompson/Center Encore
Pro-Hunter “Speed Breech” System
The Encore Pro-Hunter Muzzleloader barrel is equipped with a
“Speed Breech” breech plug system and a rotating extractor for
convenience in unloading and cleaning. It differs from the stan-
dard T/C Encore muzzleloading barrel in several important
aspects as detailed here.
The Encore Pro-Hunter “Speed Breech” breech plug uses an
interrupted “Buttress” thread design that requires only 1/4 turn to
remove it or to install it.
NEVER ATTEMPT TO REMOVE A CHARGE FROM
YOUR ENCORE PRO HUNTER MUZZLELOADER
UNTIL YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY CERTAIN THAT THE
FIREARM IS DE-CAPPED (PRIMER IS REMOVED FROM THE
BREECH PLUG). AN ACCIDENTAL DISCHARGE CAN CAUSE
INJURY AND/OR DEATH TO THE SHOOTER OR
BYSTANDERS AND DAMAGE TO PROPERTY.
REMOVING THE “SPEED BREECH” - BREECH PLUG
To remove the breech plug from the Encore Pro Hunter muzzle-
loader barrel - the extractor must first be tipped out of the way
(see FIG.4) - to allow the breech plug wrench access. First, tip
the barrel open and remove the primer. Then draw the extractor
slightly rearward and rotate it 90 dgrees (in either direction) to
allow clearance for the breech plug wrench (FIG.5).
The breech plug is removed from the barrel by turning it 1/4 turn
counter-clockwise (as viewed from the breech end of the barrel)
with the wrench supplied (FIG.6). The supplied breech plug
wrench has a clip which automatically engages a groove in the
breech plug when it is pushed onto it - allowing you to easily
withdraw the unscrewed breech plug from the barrel (see FIG.7).
REMOVING A CHARGE FROM THE ENCORE PRO HUNTER
MUZZLELOADER
Under normal conditions, an Encore muzzleloader is unloaded
simply by firing it into a suitable and safe backstop. There are,
however, some conditions under which the firearm cannot be
fired and the charge must be removed. This will require the
removal of the breech plug.
