GE864- QUAD Har dwar e User Guide 1vv0300872 Rev.1 2010- 04- 02 6.2. Gener al Design Rules The pr incipal guidelines for the Power Supply Design embr ace thr ee differ ent design steps: the electr ical design the ther mal design the PCB layout. 6.2.1. Electrical Design Guidelines The electr ical design of the power supply depends str ongly fr om the power sour ce wher e this power is dr ained.
GE864- QUAD Har dwar e User Guide 1vv0300872 Rev.1 2010- 04- 02 An example of linear r egulator with 5V input is: 6.2.1.2. +12V input Sour ce Power Suppl y Design Guidel ines The desir ed output for the power supply is 3.8V; hence due to the big differ ence between the input sour ce and the desir ed output, a linear r egulator is not suited and shall not be used.
GE864- QUAD Har dwar e User Guide 1vv0300872 Rev.1 2010- 04- 02 Make sur e the low ESR capacitor on the power supply output (usually a tantalum one) is r ated at least 10V. For Car applications a spike pr otection diode must be inser ted close to the power input, in or der to clean the supply fr om spikes. A pr otection diode must be inser ted close to the power input, in or der to save the GE864- QUAD fr om power polar ity inver sion. This can be the same diode as for spike pr otection.
GE864- QUAD Har dwar e User Guide 1vv0300872 Rev.1 2010- 04- 02 6.2.1.3. Batter y Sour ce Power Suppl y Design Guidel ines The desir ed nominal output for the power supply is 3.8V and the maximum voltage allowed is 4.5 V , hence a single 3.7V Li- Ion cell batter y type is suited for supplying the power to the Telit GE864- QUAD module. CAUTION: The thr ee cells Ni/Cd or Ni/MH 3,6 V Nom .
GE864- QUAD Har dwar e User Guide 1vv0300872 Rev.1 2010- 04- 02 Dur ing the fast char ge phase the process pr oceeds with a cur r ent limited char ging; this cur r ent limit depends on the r equir ed time for the complete char ge and fr om the batter y pack capacity. Dur ing this phase the voltage acr oss the batter y ter minal s still r aises but at a lower r ate. Once the batter y voltage r eaches its maximum voltage then the process goes into its thir d state: Final char ging.
GE864- QUAD Har dwar e User Guide 1vv0300872 Rev.1 2010- 04- 02 As you can see, the char ging pr ocess is not a tr ivial task to be done; mor eover all these oper ations must star t only if batter y temper atur e is inside a char ging r ange, usually 5°C – 45°C.
GE864- QUAD Har dwar e User Guide 1vv0300872 Rev.1 2010- 04- 02 NOTE: The aver age consumption dur ing tr ansmissions depends on the power level at which the device is r equested to tr ansmit by the networ k. The aver age cur r ent consumption hence var ies significantly. Consider ing the ver y low cur r ent dur ing idle, especially if Power Saving function is enabled, it is possible to consider fr om the ther mal point of view that the device absor bs cur r ent significantly only dur ing calls.
GE864- QUAD Har dwar e User Guide 1vv0300872 Rev.1 2010- 04- 02 The protection diode must be placed close to the input connector wher e the power sour ce is dr ained. The PCB tr aces fr om the input connector to the power r egulator IC must be wide enough to ensur e no voltage drops occur when the 2A cur r ent peaks ar e absor bed.
GE864- QUAD Har dwar e User Guide 1vv0300872 Rev.1 2010- 04- 02 7. Antenna The antenna connection and boar d layout design ar e the most impor tant par t in the full pr oduct design and they str ongly r eflect on the pr oduct over all per for mances, hence r ead car efully and follow the r equir ements and the guidelines for a pr oper design. 7.1.
GE864- QUAD Har dwar e User Guide 1vv0300872 Rev.1 2010- 04- 02 Fur ther mor e if the device is developed for the US mar ket and/or Canada mar ket, it shall comply to the FCC and/or IC appr oval r equir ements: This device is to be used only for mobile and fixed application. The antenna(s) used for this tr ansmitter must be installed to pr ovide a separ ation distance of at least 20 cm fr om all per sons and must not be co- located or oper ating in conjunction with any other antenna or tr ansmitter .
GE864- QUAD Har dwar e User Guide 1vv0300872 Rev.1 2010- 04- 02 7.3. GSM Antenna Installation Guidelines Install the antenna in a place cover ed by the GSM signal. The Antenna must be installed to provide a separ ation distance of at least 20 cm fr om all per sons and must not be co- located or oper ating in conjunction with any other antenna or tr ansmitter ; Antenna shall not be installed inside metal cases Antenna shall be installed also accor ding Antenna manufactur er instr uctions.
