Primary Entry Routes
Inhalation and absorption
Target Organs
Mucous membranes, skin, and digestive tract.
Acute Effects
Inhalation: Irritation of mucous membranes and respiratory tract. May cause
headache, nausea, vomiting, dizziness and loss of coordination
Eye: Highly irritating
Skin: Moderately irritating. May cause drying of skin.
Ingestion: Irritating to mucous membranes and digestive tract. May cause
nausea, vomiting or diarrhea.
Chronic Effect: Prolonged exposure to skin may cause dermatitis. Evidence from
animal studies suggest that asphalt left on the skin for long periods of time may cause local
carcinomas, but there have not been any reports of this effect on human skin that can be
attributed to asphalt alone.
