If ping fails with
destination host unreachable
, either your system
or the desired server is not properly configured or down. Check
whetheryour system is reachable by running
ping
IP addressor
your_hostname
from anothermachine.If you can reachyour machine
from anothermachine,it is the serverthat is not running at all or not
configured correctly.
If ping fails with
unknown host
, the name serviceis not configured
correctly or the hostnameused was incorrect. For furthercheckson
this matter,referto Step 4b (page 102). If ping still fails, eitheryour
networkcard is not configured correctly or your networkhardware
is faulty.

Use
host hostname
to check whether the hostname of the server you
are trying to connectto is properly translatedinto an IP address and
vice versa.If this commandreturns the IP address of this host, the
name serviceis up and running.If the
host
commandfails, checkall
networkconfiguration files relating to name and address resolution
on your host:
/etc/resolv.conf
This file is used to keep trackof the name serverand domain you
are currently using.It can be modifiedmanually or automatically
adjusted by YaST or DHCP. Automatic adjustmentis preferable.
However,make sure that this file has the following structure and
all networkaddressesand domain names are correct:
search
fully_qualified_domain_name
nameserver
ipaddress_of_nameserver
This file can contain more than one name serveraddress,but at
leastone of them must be correct to provide name resolutionto
your host. If needed,adjust this file using the YaST NetworkSet-
ting module (Hostname/DNS tab).
If your networkconnectionis handled via DHCP, enable DHCP to
change hostnameand name serviceinformation by selecting
Change Hostnamevia DHCP and Update Name Serversand Search
List via DHCP in the YaST DNS and Hostnamemodule.
/etc/nsswitch.conf
This file tells Linux where to look for name serviceinformation.It
shouldlook like this:
