A.2.5 Network Problems
Many problems of your systemmay be network-related,even though they do not
seem to be at first. For example, the reason for a systemnot allowing usersto log
in may be a networkproblem of some kind. This sectionintroducesa simple check
list you can apply to identify the causeof any networkproblem encountered.
Procedure A.6 How to IdentifyNetworkProblems
When checkingthe networkconnectionof your machine, proceed as follows:
1 If you usean ethernet connection, checkthe hardware first.Make sure that
your networkcable is properly plugged into your computerand router (or hub,
etc.).The control lights next to your ethernet connectorare normally both be
active.
If the connectionfails, check whetheryour networkcable works with another
machine. If it does, your networkcard causes the failure. If hubs or switches
are included in your networksetup, they may be faulty, as well.
2 If using a wirelessconnection, checkwhetherthe wirelesslink can be estab-
lished by other machines. If not, contact the wireless network'sadministrator.
3 Once you have checked your basicnetworkconnectivity, try to find out which
serviceis not responding.Gather the address information of all networkservers
neededin your setup.Either look them up in the appropriateYaST module or
ask your system administrator. The followinglist gives someof the typical
networkserversinvolved in a setup togetherwith the symptoms of an outage.
DNS (Name Service)
A broken or malfunctioning name service affects the network'sfunctional-
ity in many ways.If the local machine relies on any networkserversfor
authenticationand these serverscannot be found due to name resolution
