Login to EncryptedHome Partition Fails
It is recommendedto use an encryptedhome partition for laptops. If you cannot log
in to your laptop, the reasonis usually simple:your partitioncould not be unlocked.
During the boot time, you have to enter the passphraseto unlock your encrypted
partition. If you do not enter it, the boot process continues, leaving the partition
locked.
To unlock your encryptedpartition, proceed as follows:
1 Switchto the text consolewith[ Ctrl] +[ Alt] +[ F1].
2
Become
root
.
3 Restartthe unlockingprocessagain with:
/etc/init.d/boot.crypto restart
4 Enter your passphraseto unlock your encryptedpartition.
5 Exit the text consoleand switchbackto the login screenwith[
Alt
] +[
F7
].
6 Log in asusual.
Login Successfulbut GNOME Desktop Fails
If this is the case,it is likely that your GNOME configurationfiles have becomecor-
rupted. Some symptomsmay include the keyboard failing to work, the screen geom-
etry becomingdistorted,or even the screen coming up as a bare gray field. The im-
portant distinctionis that if anotheruser logs in, the machine worksnormally. It is
then likely that the problem can be fixed relativelyquicklyby simply moving the
user's GNOME configurationdirectory to a new location, which causes GNOME to
initialize a new one. Althoughthe useris forced to reconfigure GNOME,no data is
lost.
1 Switchto a text consoleby pressing[ Ctrl] +[ Alt] +[ F1].
2 Log in withyourusername.
3 Move the user'sGNOME configurationdirectoriesto a temporarylocation:
mv .gconf .gconf-ORIG-RECOVER
mv .gnome2 .gnome2-ORIG-RECOVER
4 Log out.
5 Log in again, butdo notrunany applications.
