Operation Manual

The returned line indicatesthat the machine'sdefault runlevel(
initdefault
) is set
to
5
and thatit shouldboot to the graphical desktop. If the runlevel is set to any
othernumber, use the YaST Runlevel Editor module to set it to
5
.
IMPORTANT
Do not editthe runlevel configuration manually. OtherwiseSuSEconfig (run by
YaST) will overwritethesechangeson its next run. If you need to make manual
changes here, disable future SuSEconfigchangesby setting
CHECK_INITTAB
in
/etc/sysconfig/suseconfig
to
no
.
If the runlevelis set to
5
, your desktopor X Windows software is probably misconfig-
ured or corrupted.Examine the log files at
/var/log/Xorg.*.log
for detailed messages
from the X serveras it attemptedto start. If the desktopfails during start, it may log
error messages to
/var/log/messages
. If these error messageshint at a configuration
problem in the X server, try to fix these issues. If the graphical systemstill does not
come up, considerreinstallingthe graphical desktop.
TIP: StartingX Window System Manually
One quick test:the
startx
commandshould force the X Window Systemto start
with the configured defaultsif the user is currently logged in on the console. If
that does not work,it should log errors to the console.
A.2.4 Login Problems
Login problems are thosewhere your machinedoes,in fact, boot to the expected
welcomescreen or login prompt, but refusesto accept the username and password,
or acceptsthem but then does not behaveproperly (fails to startthe graphic desktop,
produceserrors, drops to a commandline, etc.).
Valid Username and Password CombinationsFail
This usually occurs when the system is configured to use networkauthenticationor
directory servicesand, for some reason, is unable to retrieveresults from its config-
ured servers. The
root
user,as the only local user,is the only userthat can still log
in to thesemachines. The following are some common reasonswhy a machine ap-
pears functionalbut is unable to processlogins correctly:
The networkis not working. For furtherdirectionson this, turn to SectionA.2.5,
“Network Problems” (page 100).
DNSis not workingat the moment(whichpreventsGNOMEor KDEfrom working
and the system from making validated requeststo secure servers). One indication
that this is the caseis that the machinetakes an extremelylong time to respond
to any action.Find more information about this topic in SectionA.2.5,“Network
Problems (page 100).
