3 SelectInstallationand proceedwith the installationas describedin Chapter1,
Installation with YaST (↑Reference).
Procedure A.5 VNC Installation
1 Boot forinstallation.
2 Enterthe followingtext at the boot optionsprompt:
vnc=1 vncpassword= some_password
Replace
some_password
with the password to use for VNC installation.
3 SelectInstallationthen press[ Enter] to startthe installation.
Instead of startingright into the graphical installation routine, the system
continuesto run in a text mode, then halts, displaying a messagecontaining
the IP address and port numberat which the installercan be reachedviaa
browser interfaceor a VNC viewer application.
4 If using a browserto accessthe installer,launch the browserand enterthe
address information provided by the installationroutineson the future open-
SUSE machine and hit[ Enter]:
http:// ip_address_of_machine:5801
A dialog opens in the browserwindow prompting you for the VNC password.
Enter it and proceed with the installationas describedin Chapter1, Installation
with YaST (↑Reference).
IMPORTANT
Installationvia VNC workswith any browserunder any operatingsystem,
provided Java supportis enabled.
Provide the IP addressand password to your VNC viewerwhenprompted.A
window opens,displaying the installationdialogs. Proceed with the installation
as usual.
Only MinimalisticBoot Screen Started
You insertedthe medium into the drive, the BIOS routines are finished,but the system
does not startwith the graphical boot screen. Insteadit launchesa very minimalistic
text-based interface. This may happen on any machinenot providing sufficient
graphicsmemory for renderinga graphical boot screen.
Although the text boot screen looks minimalistic,it provides nearly the same func-
tionality as the graphicalone:
