Installation Guide

SBS Modied Mineral-Surfaced Roll Roong Application Instructions
These application instructions are not applicable as part of a built-up roofing system. The
following application instructions require the membrane be applied over a wood deck with an
incline exceeding two (2) inches per foot. The deck must also drain freely at all points.
Lap Cement: Asphalt-based roofing cement
that complies with ASTM D 4586 must be
used. Application with a serrated trowel is
recommended. Further, cement should be
used only in an amount that is necessary to
obtain adhesion. In no case should cement
usage exceed 2 gallons per 100 square feet
of cemented area. If adhesive thickens in cool
weather, place cans in warm water. DO NOT
HEAT OVER FLAMES.
Roof Deck: All decks must be firm; solid;
free of sharp edges or depressions, moisture
or freezing effects, and dust or debris; and
capable of supporting all anticipated deck
loads. Pieces of tin or other suitable metal
should be nailed over all knot holes and large
cracks. If sheet metal is not available, pieces of
supercapSBS may be used. The roof deck should be
swept clean of all dirt and loose material.
Unrolling: Rolls of caps should never be put down in
full-length rolls. They should be cut two 16-foot lengths.
When ambient temperature is below 60°F and cloudy or
overcast, supercap membranes should be cut to three
11-foot lengths and placed in a warm area (>50°F) for 24
hours prior to application. Always unroll this roofing on
a flat, smooth surface. Wrinkles should be pulled out
during final fastening.
New Construction: Install metal flashing around the
edges of the roof, using nails to secure. Overhang
the roof at least 1/2” and cut the flashing to the proper
length. Cut 18-inch wide strips for starter strips around
all of the edges of the roof and spread roofing cement
around all of the outer edges of the roof using a large
paint roller affixed to a roller handle. Sweep the deck
to remove any debris, dust, or loose particles. Apply
a layer of 15/30 # felt or a G2 base over the entire roof
deck area. Lay in a horizontal manner, lapping each
course 3 inches over the lower course and 6 inches
where ends join. Lay the underlayment at least 6” over
all hips, ridges and valleys.
Re-Roofing Application: Prior to applying the
membrane, remove gravel, loose nails and slag. Do not
apply any roofing membrane over a moist surface. If
there are blisters or buckles, they should be cut open.
Nail edges to create a smooth surface.
Application of Fasteners: Use large-head corrosion-
resistant nails (11-12 gauge) with heads of at least 3/8
inch in diameter. All fasteners should penetrate into the
wood deck at least 3/4 inch or through a plywood deck
or OSB (oriented strand board) a minimum of 1/8 inch.
Concealed Nail Method - Edge Strips: Place 9-inch
wide strips of roll roofing along the eaves and rakes,
positioning them to overhang the deck 1/4 inch to 1/8
inch. Fasten the strips with rows of nails located 1” and
8” from the roof edge and spaced 4” at the center on
each row.
Dormers: Roof dormers before main roof.
Valleys: Apply valley sheets first. Cut a length of
roofing into two strips: one 18 inches wide for the
lower layer and one 36 inches wide for the upper layer.
Fold these strips to conform to the angle of the valley
or gutter. To apply the lower layer, place supercapSBS
face down. Start at the bottom and nail every 6 inches
along the edges. The ends should be butted, not
lapped. Coat this layer with lap cement and apply the
upper sheet face up over the lower sheets. The ends
of the upper sheet should be lapped 6 inches and
cemented but not nailed. Nail the second sheet along
the outer edges every 6 inches. The sheets used to
cover the main roof should overlap the valley sheets
to within 1 inch of the valley angle, align with the rake
line of the valley, and be cemented and nailed for long
side laps.
