Application instructions for Supercap SBS
: This
applicationinstructionisnotapplicableaspartofa
built‐up roofing system. The following application
instructions require the membrane to be applied
overawooddeckwithaninclineexceeding2inches
per foot. The deck must also drain freely at all
points.
Storage
:Materialsshouldbestoredontheirendsin
adrylocation. They should be kept clean and away
from excessive heat or cold. Labels should not be
removed. In addition, protective coverings should
not be torn off until they are ready for application.
Materials should be stored in an enclosed
area in
whichtemperaturesareabove50°Fandbelow90°F.
They should not be stored directly on the ground.
Pallets should not be stored more than two high
withoutprotectivebracing.
LapCement:Asphalt‐basedroofingceme ntthatcomplies
withASTMspecificationD4586mustbeused.Application
withaserratedtrowelisrecommended.Further,cement
shouldbeusedonlyinanamountthatisnecessaryto
obtainadhesion.Innocaseshouldcementusageexceed2
gallonsper100squarefeetof
cementedarea.Ifadhesive
thickensincoolweather,placecansinwarmwater.DO
NOTHEATOVERFLAMES.
RoofDeck:Alldecksmustbefirm;solid;freeofsharp
edgesordepressions,moistureorfreezingeffects,and
dustordebris;andcapableofsupportingallanticipated
deckloads.Thesubstrateshouldconsistofdry,well‐
seasonedlumberofuniformthicknessnotmorethan6
incheswideoraproperlyinstalled
andconditionedroof
deckconstructedofexterior‐typeplywoodwitha
minimumthicknessof3/8inch.Alternatively,APA‐rated,
non‐veneer‐structuredpanelsof7/16inchthicknessmay
beused.Piecesoftinorothersuitablemetalshouldbe
nailedoverallknotholesandlargecracks.Ifsheetmetal
is
notavailable,piecesofthisroofingmaybeused.Theroof
deckshouldbesweptcleanofalldirtandloosematerials.
Unrolling
:Rollsofcapsshouldneverbeputdownin
full‐lengthrolls.Theyshouldbecuttothefollowing
length: 2 16‐foot lengths.When ambient
temperature is below 60ºF and cloudy or overcast
Supercap membranes should be cut to 3 11‐foot
lengths (maximum) and placed in a warm area
(>50ºF) for 24 hours prior to application. Always
unrollthisroofingona flat,smoothsurface.Then,
loosely re‐roll the sheets the reverse way. The
roofing should be drawn up tightly during
application. Wrinkles should be pulled out during
finalfastening.
NewConstruction:Installmetalflashingaroundtheedges
oftheroof,usingahammerandroofingnailstosecureit.
Besuretooverhangtheroofatleast1/2inch.Cutthe
flashingtotheproperlengthusingapairoftinsnips.Cut
enough18‐inchwidestripsfromtherollroofingtocreate
starterstripsaroundalloftheedgesoftheroof.Spread
roofingcementaroundalloftheouteredgesoftheroof
usingalargepaintrolleraffixedtoarollerhandle.Sweep
thedecktoremoveanydebris,dust,orlooseparticles.
Applyalayerof15/30#feltoraG2baseovertheentire
roofdeckarea.Layinahorizontalmanner,lappingeach
course2inchesoverthelowercourseand4incheswhere
endsjoin.Laytheunderlaymentatleast6inchesoverall
hips,ridges,andvalleys.
Re‐RoofingApplication:Priortoapplyingthemembrane,
removeallgravel,loosenails,orslag.Donotapplyany
roofingmembraneoveramoistsurface.Ifthereare
blistersorbuckles,theyshouldbecutopen.Nailboth
edgestocreateasmoothsurface.Priortoapplyingthe
Supercap,theroofsurfaceshouldbesweptcleanofalldirt
andlooseparticles.Ifthesurfaceiswet,allowittodry
priortoapplyingthemembrane.
ApplicationofFastenersNails
:Properattachmentofall
membraneunderlaymentisessential.Uselarge‐head
corrosion‐resistantnails(11‐12gauge)withheadsofat
least1inchindiameter.Allfastenersshouldbelong
enoughtopenetrateintothewooddeckatleast3/4inch
orcompletelythroughaplywooddeckorOSB
aminimum
of1/8inch.
Valleys:Applyvalleysheetsfirst.Cutalengthofroofing
intotwostrips:one18incheswideforthelowerlayerand
one36incheswidefortheupperlayer.Foldthesestripsto
conformtotheangleofthevalleyorgutter.Toapplythe
lowerlayer,placeSupercapSBS
facedown.Startatthe
bottomandnailevery6inchesalongtheedges.Theends
shouldbebutted,notlapped.Coatthislayerwithlap
cementandapplytheuppersheetfaceupoverthelower
sheets.Theendsoftheuppersheetshouldbelapped6
inchesand
cemented,butnotnailed.Nailthesecond
sheetalongtheouteredgesevery6inches.Thesheets
usedtocoverthemainroofshouldoverlapthevalley
sheetstowithin1inchofthevalleyangle,alignwiththe
rakelineofthevalley,andbecementedandnailedfor
long
sidelaps.
