BaffleRemoval
Aswithanymaintenanceconcerningthisunit,besuretheunitis“OFF,”hascompletedthe
Shut‐Downcycle,andiscompletelycoolBEFOREbeginning.Beawarethatmetalpartsinthe
fireboxcanremainHOTlongafterthefirehasgoneoutandEVENaftertheShut‐Downcycle
is
complete.Alwaysuseextremecautionwhenhandlingpotentiallyhotstoveparts,evenifyou
thinktheyshouldbecold.
WeeklymaintenanceshouldincludethestepslistedinthissectionASWELLASthestepslisted
inthe“DailyMaintenance”section.
Thelargebaffleplatethatrestsaboveandbehindtheburnpot(refertotheexplodeddiagram
intherearofthismanualandtheimagesintheDailyMaintenancesection)shouldberemoved
weekly.Thiscanbedonebyliftinguptheplateandpullingitout.Theareabehindtheplate
shouldthenbecleanedthoroughly,andtheplateplacedbackintheoriginalposition.
Useascrewdriverorchiselandbreakanycreosotebuild‐upinthefrontoftheunit,wherethe
pelletsarefedintotheburnpotfromtheBottomAugerTube(seeIllustrationinprevious
section).Moistureinthepelletsandresultingbuild‐upinthisareacancausethebottomauger
to“squeal”orsqueak.
CarbonRemoval:Duringnormaloperationcarbonfromthecombustionofpelletfuelwilltend
tobuilduponthetipoftheauger,onthewearplateandsidesofthefirepot,andinthe
mouthofthefeedtube.Itisessentialthatthisresidueberemovedtoensuretroublefree
operationoftheunit.Thefrequencywithwhichthiscarbonmustberemovedvarieswith
brandsofpellets,dependingonmoisturecontent,woodtype,foreignmaterial(dirt,etc.)in
pellets,andotherfactors.
Toremovethiscarbon,simplyscrapeitoffusingthebladeofaflattippedscrewdriveror
similarinstrument;also,toremovecarbonfromthefeedtube,scrapeasmuchascanbeeasily
reached,theninsertanemeryboard(fingernailfilemadefromapopsiclestickandsandpaper)
betweenthefeedaugerandthefeedtubeandsandoutanyresiduenotremovedfrom
scrapingalone.Clearingthiscarbonresiduefromthefeedtubeisessentialforproper
operationofthefeedauger,whichisdesignedtofloatfreelyinthefeedtubeallowingsmooth
fuelflow,alesserpossibilityofajam,andaquieterunit.
Replacethebafflebyreversingtheabovesteps.
Ifexcessashaccumulationisfoundintheexhaustchamberorventingsystemduringmonthly
maintenance,theintervalbetweencleaningsshouldbereducedtoeliminatethepossibilityof
poorstoveperformanceduetoashaccumulation.
