Model Orientation
Theorientationofmodelsonthebuildtrayaffectshowquicklyand
efficientlytheywillbeproducedbythe3Dprinter,whereandhowmuch
supportmaterialisused,andwhetherornotmodelpartswillhaveagloss
finish.Therefore,youshouldconsideravarietyoffactorswhendeciding
howtoplacemo
delsonthetray,usingthefollowingpositioningrules
.
X-Y-Z Rule
Thisruleconsidersamodelʹsouterdimensions.
¾ SincetheprintheadsmovebackandforthalongtheXaxis,theprinting
timealongthisaxisisrelativelyshort,comparedtoprintingtimealong
theYaxisandZaxis.Fromthispointofview,itisadvisabletoplacethe
objectʹslongestdimensionalongtheXaxis.
¾ Sincehighresolutionmodelsarebuiltup,ontheZaxis,in16micron
layers,itisverytimeconsumingtoprintatallobject.Fromthispointof
view,itisadvisabletoplacetheobjectʹssmallestdimensionalongtheZ
axis.
¾ Sincetheprintheadsmeasureabout2inches(5centimeters)ontheY
axis,modelsmeasuringlessthanthis(ontheYaxis)areprintedinone
pass.Fromthispointofview,itisadvisabletoplacetheobjectʹs
intermediatedimensionalongtheYaxis.
Tall-Left Rule
Thisruleconsidersmodelswhere,afterbeingorientatedonthebuildtray
accordingtootherconsiderations,onesideistallerthantheother.
¾ SincetheprintheadsmovealongtheXaxisfromlefttoright,taller
sectionsontherightrequiretheprintheadstoscanunnecessarilyfrom
theleftuntilreachingthem.If,ontheotherhand,thetallersectionsare
positionedontheleftofthetray,theprintheadsonlyha
vetoscanthe
modeluntil
printingthesesections—oncethelowerpartshavebeen
completed.Therefore,youshouldpositionthetallersideofthemodel,
whenpossible,ontheleft.
Recess-Up Rule
Thisruleconsidersmodelscontainingsurfacerecesses.
¾ Recessesinthesurface(likehollows,drillholes,etc.)should,when
possible,bepositionedfaceup.
Fine-Surface Rule
Thisruleconsidersmodelsthathaveonesideonwhichtherearefine
details(likethekeypadsideofatelephone).
¾ Thesideofthemodelcontainingfinedetailsshould,whenpossible,be
positionedfaceup.Thisresultsinasmoothfinish.
The following rules are based on the fact that support material is not
required on the top of the printed model.
