Selecting
Objects
Tomanipulateanobjectonthebuildtrayorassigncharacteristicstoit
(modelmaterial,surfacefinish,etc.),youmustfirstselecttheobject.You
selectanobjectbyclickingit,eitheronthetrayorinthetrayhierarchy
pane.Itsimageonthebuildtraychangescolor(tolightblue,bydefault)
anditsnameishighlightedinthetrayhie
rarchypane.Yo
ucanselect
multipleobjectsbypressingthe
CtrlorShiftkeyswhileclickingadditional
objects.
Sometimes,youneedtoselectindividualelementsofanassembly.Other
times,youneedtoselecttheentireassembly.Tochoosewhichwillbe
selectedwhenyouclickonthemodel,firstclicktheappropriateicononthe
toolbar:

Note: When selecting one element of an assembly from the hierarchy
pane, the Select Element
icon is automatically activated.
Splitting
Objects into
Components
Youcanconvertacomplexobjecttoanassemblyofcomponentparts.Todo
so,yousplitthestlfilethatrepresentstheobjectintoangroupofseparate
stlfiles,eachonerepresentingacomponent.(ThisisreferredtointheObjet
Studiointerfaceasseparatingtheobjectintoshells.)Yo
ucanthen
assigna
modelmaterialtoeachstlfile,andyoucansavethenewly‐created
assemblyasanobjdffile.
To convert an object to an assembly of component parts:
1. Iftheobjectisnotdisplayed,placeitonthebuildtraybyinsertingitsstl
file(see“OpeningSTL&SLCFiles”onpage 3).
Theobjectappears—onthebuildtrayandinthehierarchypane—asa
singlepart.Itisassigned,bydefault,the“primary”modelmaterial.(If
ObjetStudioisconfiguredwithasecond
arymaterial,youcanassign
it—oradigitalmaterial—totheentireobject.Thisisexplainedin
“Model‐MaterialSettings”onpage 9.)

Note: There is no need to resize or arrange the object on the build tray at
this time.
2. Withtheobjectselected,doeitherofthefollowing:
• FromtheObjectmenu,selectSeparate into Shells.
or—
• Onthetoolbar,clicktheSeparateintoShellsicon .
