Citrix XenServer Recovery Guide
The purpose of this document is to provide the steps necessary to perform system recovery when using Citrix
XenServer and to define the aspects of system recovery that are and are not supported. This guide does not
include all the features and options available with SBAdmin, but is intended to be used as an addendum to the
SBAdmin User Guide a nd the SBAdmin Linux System Recovery Guide.
SBAdmin provides support for Citrix XenServer vers ions 5. 6 and 6.0.
System Backup and Restore of Citrix XenServer (dom0)
Citrix XenServer is based on Xen virtualization technology. Therefore, you will see the server referred to as
dom0 in this an d other doc uments. Th e virtu alized guest machines that run on t he ser ver are r eferre d to as
domU systems.
Performin g a system backup of the C itrix XenServ er(dom0) is done much in the same manner as any other
Linux system. Refer to the SBAdmin User Guide for additional details. However, the following considerations
deserve me ntion beca use th ey are s pecific to Citrix Xe nServ er dom0 s ystems:
Including domU Systems in dom0 Full System Backup
You may p erform a f ull s ystem backu p of th e Citrix XenServer (dom0) t hat will inclu de all v irtual ized (d omU)
systems. However, it is good pract ice to either shutd own the domU systems or use th e SBAdmin sn apsho t
backup feature on the logical volumes t hat stor e the d omU im ages. This will ens ure the d omU s ystems are
in a stable st ate at the time o f the backup.
To include the domU systems in a system backup, it is necessary to understand how the domU systems are
stored on dom 0. When the domU is cr eated, a logical v olume will be cr eated on the dom0. Whi le the domU
is running this logical volume will be available to the dom0. However, the dom0 never mounts any file
systems for t he domU. T o includ e the data for t he dom U it is nec essar y to ensure t hat ra w logic al volumes
are inclu ded in the backup. This opt ion is co nfigur ed in the p rofile, note t he optio n to incl ude ra w logical
volumes is NOT configured by default.
To include domU s ystems t hat are n ot runnin g at the t ime of t he bac kup, it m ay be n ecessar y to act ivate
the logical v olumes t hat cont ain dom U data. T o determi ne the logical v olume o n the dom0 a ssociat ed with
the data for the domU. Use the “xe vm-disk-list” command. The output will be similar to the following.
# xe vm-disk-lis t
