Introduction 3 General Description The StorCase Technology Data Express® DE90i-A is a removable lightweight drive carrier and receiving frame designed to provide durable and reliable mounting for one (1) 3.5 AT/IDE drive within a 5.25" half-height peripheral slot (Figure 1). The DE90i-A allows a drive to be removed and transported to another DE90i-A-equipped computer or expansion chassis, and also provides the ability to secure sensitive data by removing and storing the drive safely for future use.
4 Introduction Receiving Frame Front Panel (Figure 3) The Key Lock/Drive Power Switch performs three (3) functions. The key lock assures proper seating of the device carrier within the receiving frame, turns power to the device carrier on and off, and prevents unauthorized removal or installation of the carrier. For the computer to access data on the DE90i-A disk drive, the key must be turned counterclockwise to the locked position.
Introduction 5 Receiving Frame Rear Panel (Figure 4) DC Power Connector (J3): The DE90i-A uses a standard 4-pin DC Power Connector to accept DC power. I/O Connector (J2): The input/output connector provides a standard interface for all IDE signals. Activity Select Jumper (JP39): Default setting "A" uses the drive activity indicator light on the receiving frame. Set jumper to position "B" to use drive activity indicator light on computer chassis.

Installation 7 INSTALLATION Installing the Drive in the Carrier Preparation While performing the steps in this section, work on a soft surface to prevent excessive shock to the drive being installed. Also refer to the manufacturer's documentation provided with the drive. NOTE: A #2 Phillips screwdriver will be required during this procedure. 1. Remove the drive from its protective packaging. 2. Plastic Drive Bezel: If the drive came equipped with a plastic front bezel, it must be removed. 3.
8 Installation NOTE: For dual, interchangeable drive configuration, the two drives must be of the same make and model. The appropriate signals from the drive must be connected to J3 on the carrier board. These signals are used to enable the functions of the unit selection, as well as the front panel display, and drive activity indicator light. A 3-pin wire wrap connector is provided to enable fabrication of a cable (cable not included) from the AT/IDE drive to the DE90i-A carrier circuit board.
Installation 9 The receiving frame circuit board is designed to route the drive's -HOST SLV/ACT signal (drive activity) to the activity indicator light on the front panel of the DE90i-A receiving frame. A connection to J3 Pin 3 (on the carrier board) should only be made if the drive does not support this -HOST SLV/ACT signal on Pin 39 of the interface connector (check the documentation that accompanied the drive and controller).
10 Installation If a slave drive is removed, Table 3 shows the signal levels on J3 Pin 1 & Pin 2 that will result for different W1, W2, and W3 jumper settings. Table 3: J3 Master (No Slave) Signal Levels * corresponds to a jumper installed on the carrier L (Low) corresponds to an installed jumper on the drive. H (High) corresponds to a removed jumper on the drive. StorCase Technology, Inc. DE90i-A User's Guide - Rev.

Remove and save all the jumpers.
12 Installation Installation 1. Attach the I/O cable from the drive carrier circuit board of the DE90i-A to the drive (Figure 7). 2. Attach the DC power cable from the rear distribution board to the drive (Figure 7). 3. For Method 2 Users (as defined on page 7): If the 3-pin Master/Slave select cable was created as outlined in the previous section, install it now into the connector on the drive carrier circuit board. See Figure 6 for a typical AT/IDE connection.
Installation 13 Installing the Receiving Frame The drive should be installed into the carrier before installing the receiving frame into the mounting bay of a computer or expansion chassis. NOTE: Use a #2 Phillips screwdriver during this procedure. 1. Turn OFF power to the computer. 2. Open the computer system according to the manufacturers instructions. If necessary, temporarily remove any expansion boards that may make installation difficult. 3.
14 Installation 4. With the drive carrier locked in place inside the receiving frame, install the DE90i-A into the 5.25 drive opening in the computer or expansion chassis. Use the appropriate guides to position the DE90i-A, and fasten it into place with the four (4) #6-32 Phillips screws provided. Figure 8 illustrates the location of the mounting holes. Mounting holes are provided on each side and the bottom of the receiving frame to accommodate a variety of mounting configurations.
Installation 15 9. Replace any expansion boards that may have been removed earlier. Replace the system cover according to the manufacturers instructions. 10. Reconnect any system or peripheral cables removed earlier. 11. Turn ON power to the computer. If the installation has been successful, and all cables have been properly attached, the system should boot normally.
16 Installation IDE Interface Connector J2 The I/O connector (J2) pin assignments are as follows: Table 4: AT/IDE Interface Signals Pin 01 03 05 07 09 11 13 15 17 19 21 23 25 27 29 31 33 35 37 39 Signal Host ResetHost Data 7 Host Data 6 Host Data 5 Host Data 4 Host Data 3 Host Data 2 Host Data 1 Host Data 0 Ground Reserved HIOWHIORReserved Reserved IRQ 14 Host ADDR 1 Host ADDR 0 Host CS0DASP- I/O O I/O I/O I/O I/O I/O I/O I/O I/O O O I O O O Notes Pin 02 04 06 08 10 12 14 16 18 20 22 24 26 28 30 32 3

20 Appendix B - Attaching the ON/OFF Key Appendix B - Attaching the ON/OFF Key The following information will provide the necessary steps to attach the ON/OFF key to the key lock mechanism so that it is non-removable, preventing accidental key loss. The procedure can be reversed at a later date to revert back to a removable key. 1. Make certain power is OFF to the receiving frame. Locate the rectangular shaped key lock mechanism access hole on the inside of the receiving frame.
