Only metal penetration-resistant
inlays are used.
Metal: the penetration resistance is
less compromised by the shape of
the pointed object / hazard (e.g.
diameter, geometry, sharpness). Due
to restrictions in the manufacture of
the footwear, the entire tread surface
is not covered.
Manufacturer’s information: Safety
boots with protection against chain
saw cuts in accordance with
EN ISO 17249:2013
Personal protective equipment
cannot ensure total protection
against cuts from hand-held chain
saws. Experience has shown that it is
possible to design personal
protective equipment so that a
certain degree of protection is
provided.
The protective effect can be achieved
by means of various functional
principles, such as:
– Chain or cutting attachment
slipping upon contact, so that the
material is not shredded. In the
case of rubber boots, this
protective function may deteriorate
over time.
– Fibers that are pulled into the chain
drive sprocket and immobilize the
chain.
– Braking the chain by the use of
fibers with high cut resistance that
absorb the kinetic energy and thus
slow the chain down.
Often, more than one of these
principles is used. There are three
protection levels, each
corresponding to a different chain
saw protective effect.
– Protection level 1: chain speed
20 m/s
– Protection level 2: chain speed
24 m/s
– Protection level 3: chain speed 28
m/s
It is recommended that the boots be
selected according to the nature of
the hazard. It is important for the
boots and trousers to overlap.
In addition, the following pictogram
indicating the protection level
(level 1, level 2 or level 3) must
appear on a label at least 30 mm in
size which must be permanently
affixed to the outside of the boot in a
clearly visible position.
For ergonomic reasons, protection
level 1 is used in most work
environments and operating
conditions.
General: The safety boots with
protection against cuts from hand-
held chain saws are intended only as
safety boots for forestry work. No
other application is permissible. A
guide to the selection and use of
safety boots is also provided by
