21.1 Chain Saw
21 Troubleshooting Guide
Always disconnect the chain saw from the power supply before carrying out any inspection, cleaning or maintenance.
Condition Possible Cause Remedy
Chain saw cuts out during
operation.
The chain saw was accidentally disconnected
from the power supply.
Reconnect the chain saw to the power
supply.
The GFCI has interrupted the electrical circuit. Reset the GFCI.
The electrical outlet is secured with less than
16 A.
Use a properly secured power supply.
The overload cutout was activated. Clean the chain.
Properly tension the chain.
Reset the overload cutout.
Switch the chain saw back on.
Chain saw does not start
when switched on.
The chain saw was accidentally disconnected
from the power supply.
Reconnect the chain saw to the power
supply.
The GFCI has interrupted the electrical circuit. Reset the GFCI.
The electrical outlet is secured with less than
16 A.
Use a properly secured power supply.
The chain brake is engaged. Disengage the chain brake.
Switch the chain saw back on.
The chain is tensioned too tight. Properly tension the chain.
The guide bar sprocket is blocked. Spray the guide bar sprocket with resin
remover.
During sawing, the wood
smokes or smells burnt.
The chain is dull or improperly sharpened. Properly sharpen the chain.
Working technique is improper or the saw is
being mis-used.
Obtain instruction on proper working
technique.
Insufficient bar and chain oil. Have the chain lubrication mechanism
checked by an authorized STIHL servicing
dealer.
