15 Shutting Off the Engine
► Press down the throttle trigger lockout (5) and blip the
throttle trigger (4). The Master Control Lever (3) will move
to the run position and the engine will settle down to
idling speed.
► If the engine does not start after a few attempts, follow the
pre-starting procedure (@ 14.3) and try starting the
engine again.
► Disengage the chain brake, @ 12.2.
Your chain saw is ready for operation.
► If the saw chain rotates when the engine is idling, adjust
the idle speed, @ 23.2.
NOTICE
Accelerating the engine while the chain brake is engaged or
the chain is otherwise blocked (i.e., not able to turn)
increases the load and will cause the clutch to slip
continuously. This may occur if the throttle is depressed for
more than a few seconds when the chain is pinched in the
cut or the chain brake is engaged. To reduce the risk of
overheating and damage to important components (e. g.
clutch, polymer housing components), always disengage the
chain brake before accelerating engine and before starting
cutting work. The only exception to this rule is when you
check operation of the chain brake, @ 16.1.
15.1 Shutting Off the Engine
WARNING
The saw chain will continue to rotate for a short while after
the throttle trigger is released. To avoid serious or fatal
injury, avoid contact with the moving chain. To reduce the
risk of personal injury from unintended activation or
unauthorized use, shut off the engine, ensure the chain has
stopped and engage the chain brake before walking with the
saw or setting it down.
To shut off the engine:
► Release the throttle trigger (2) and throttle trigger
lockout (1).
► Move the Master Control Lever (1) to the stop position .
The engine stops and the Master Control Lever (1)
springs back to position when released.
16.1 Checking the Operation of the Chain Brake
WARNING
Operating the saw with a missing, damaged, modified or
improperly maintained chain brake increases the risk of
severe or fatal injury from kickback. Never attempt to modify
or disable the chain brake. Never operate a saw if the chain
brake has been modified or does not function properly. If you
detect a change in the operating characteristics of the chain
brake, have your saw serviced immediately by an authorized
STIHL servicing dealer.
Before starting work, check the operation of the chain brake:
► Run the engine at idle speed.
► Engage the chain brake, @ 12.1.
► Accelerate up to full throttle for no more than 3 seconds.
A properly functioning chain brake prevents the chain from
rotating.
