16 Checking the Chain Saw
► If the chain brake fails to prevent the chain from rotating,
have the saw inspected and repaired by an authorized
STIHL servicing dealer.
16.2 Testing the Controls
Before starting work, confirm that the throttle trigger
lockout (1) and throttle trigger (2) are undamaged and
functioning properly.
Throttle Trigger Lockout (1) and Throttle Trigger (2)
WARNING
To reduce the risk of serious or fatal injuries, keep hands,
feet and other parts of the body away from the chain. Do not
touch the saw chain while the engine is running. Never touch
a moving chain with your hand or any part of your body,
@ 5.6.3. Keep bystanders out of the area while testing the
controls.
To test the controls:
► Shut off the engine, @ 15.1.
► Attempt to depress the throttle trigger.
If the trigger can be depressed without first depressing the
throttle trigger lockout, take the chain saw to an
authorized STIHL servicing dealer to be repaired before
use.
Stopping the Engine
► Start the engine, @ 14.4.
► Move the Master Control Lever to position .
The engine should stop and the Master Control Lever
should spring back to position when released.
► If the engine does not stop, move the Master Control
Lever to position .
The engine will stop.
► Take the chain saw to an authorized STIHL servicing
dealer to be repaired before use.
16.3 Testing Chain Lubrication
WARNING
Never operate your saw without bar and chain lubrication. If
the chain runs dry, the cutting attachment will be damaged
beyond repair within a very short time. A damaged chain
may break, resulting in severe or fatal personal injury.
Always check chain lubrication and the oil level in the tank
before starting work and periodically during work.
To confirm that the chain oil is flowing properly:
► Start the engine, @ 14.4.
► Disengage the chain brake, @ 12.2.
► Point the guide bar toward a bright surface.
► Accelerate the engine.
The chain should throw off a small amount of oil.
If the chain oil cannot be seen, check the oil level and refill
the tank as necessary.
► Test the chain lubrication again.
► If chain oil is still not visible, the lubrication mechanism is
not functioning. Take the saw to an authorized STIHL
servicing dealer to be repaired before use.
