► Start the engine without depressing the throttle
trigger. The engine runs and the Master Con‐
trol lever remains in position }.
► Run the engine for at least 30 seconds but no
more than 60 seconds without depressing the
throttle trigger.
WARNING
If the chain brake is disengaged, the chain may
rotate ‑ risk of injury.
Hold your chainsaw as described in the instruc‐
tion manual and do not touch the rotating saw
chain.
► Disengage the chain brake.
NOTICE
The calibration process is aborted if the throttle
trigger is released before the saw is properly cali‐
brated. It is then necessary to restart the calibra‐
tion process.
► Keep the throttle trigger fully depressed.
NOTICE
The chainsaw can be incorrectly calibrated if the
throttle trigger is not kept fully depressed during
calibration. This can damage the saw.
► Keep the throttle trigger fully depressed.
► Depress the throttle trigger for at least 30 sec‐
onds and hold it in that position.
The engine accelerates and the chain rotates.
Calibration of the saw takes place. Engine speed
varies noticeably during calibration.
If the engine stalls:
► Make another attempt to calibrate the saw.
If the engine stalls again:
► Engage the chain brake.
► Do not use your chainsaw and contact your
STIHL servicing dealer for assistance. Your
saw has a malfunction.
As soon as the engine speed drops noticeably:
► Release the throttle trigger.
The engine runs at idling speed Your saw is cali‐
brated and ready for operation.
24 Spark Arresting Screen in
Muffler
WARNUNG
To reduce the risk of fire caused by hot particles
escaping from the machine, never operate the
machine without a spark arresting screen, or with
the spark arresting screen damaged. Do not
modify the muffler or spark arresting screen. To
reduce the risk of fire from accumulated debris
such as pine needles, branches or leaves,
ensure that the muffler plugs are in place before
taking up work.
NOTICE
According to the law or regulations in some
countries or federal states, certain operations
may only be carried out if a properly serviced
spark arresting screen is provided.
► If the engine is down on power, check the
spark arresting screen in the muffler
► Wait for the muffler to cool down

► Take out the four screws
► Remove the muffler exhaust casing (1)

► Bend back the retaining tabs (2)
► Pull out the spark arresting screen (3)
► Clean the dirty spark arresting screen, replace
if damaged or heavily carbonized
► Refit the spark arresting screw in the reverse
sequence
