21.5 Cleaning the Spark Arresting Screen
WARNING
To reduce the risk of fire from the emission of hot particles,
never operate your chain saw with a missing or damaged
spark arresting screen. Never modify your muffler or spark
arresting screen. To reduce the risk of fire from the buildup
of debris such as pine needles, branches or leaves, make
sure the muffler plugs are in place before starting work.
NOTICE
Some state or federal laws or regulations may require a
properly maintained spark arrester for certain uses.
To clean the spark arrester screen:
► Shut off the engine, @ 15.
► Engage the chain brake, @ 12.1.
► Allow the chain saw and muffler to cool down.
► Remove the screw (1).
► Pull out spark arresting screen (2)
► Clean the spark arresting screen.
► If the spark arresting screen is clooged or heavily
carbonized, have it replaced by an authorized STIHL
servicing dealer.
► Re-insert the spark arresting screen and tighten the
screw.
► If muffler plugs are missing or damaged, install new plugs.
