17 Adjusting the Carburetor
Accelerate the engine.
The chain should throw off a small amount of oil.
If the chain oil cannot be seen, check the oil level and refill
the tank as necessary.
Test the chain lubrication again.
If chain oil is still not visible, the lubrication mechanism is
not functioning. Take the saw to an authorized STIHL
servicing dealer to be repaired before use.
17.1 Winter Operation
The carburetor may ice up when the saw is used at ambient
temperatures below 50 °F (10 °C). To prevent icing, the
shutter must be converted to allow warm air from around the
engine to heat the carburetor.
Shut off the engine, @ 15.1.
Engage the chain brake, @ 12.1.
Open the shroud locks (1) by turning them 1/4 turn
counter-clockwise with the combination wrench.
Remove the shroud (2).
Pull out the shutter (3).
Re-insert the shutter as shown above.
Push the shutter into the slot until it stops. The notch (4)
will remain visible when the shutter is fully inserted.
Place the shroud in position.
Tighten the shroud locks until you hear an audible click.
NOTICE
The winter operation setting should only be used in ambient
temperatures below 50 °F (10 °C). Use at higher
temperatures may cause the engine to overheat, resulting in
permanent damage. Always remember to return the shutter
to the configuration that is appropriate for ambient
temperature conditions.
17.2 Summer Operation
The shutter must be set to summer mode when working at
temperatures above 50 °F (10°C).
Shut off the engine, @ 15.1.
Engage the chain brake, @ 12.1.
