Sharpening the Master Cutter
N Sharpen the master cutter with 2 to
3 firm strokes of the file, from the
inside to the outside of the side
plate.
N Make sure the stop bar (1) butts
against the acorn nut (2).
N If necessary, readjust the acorn nut
until it butts against the stop bar –
see "Setting Up".
Sharpening the Row of Cutters
N Use the setting for the master cutter
to sharpen all the other cutters in the
row.
N Swing the filing frame upwards.
N Pull the chain along to the next
cutter in the row – push cutter
against the stop.
Make sure the stop (3) always locates
properly against the back of the cutter
being sharpened.
N Swing the filing frame down.
N Sharpen the cutter.
N Repeat this procedure until all
cutters in one row have been
sharpened.
Sharpening the Second Row of Cutters
After sharpening all the cutters in the
first row, set the filing tool for the second
row of cutters. Follow description under
"Setting Up".
N Swing the filing frame upwards.
N Loosen the knurled nut (1).
N Lift the guide clear of the teeth and
turn it to exactly the same angle
setting on the opposite side.
N Tighten down the knurled nut.
N Turn the guide bar 180° and clamp
it in the bench vise or STIHL bar
vise (special accessory).
N Reset the file.
N Swing the filing frame down.
N Position the round file between the
side plate and depth gauge of the
first cutter in the second row.
N Sharpen the first cutter in the
second row.
