English / USA !Warning! Prolonged use of an edger (or other machines) exposing the operator to vibrations may produce whitefinger disease (Raynaud's phenomenon) or carpal tunnel syndrome. These conditions reduce the hand's ability to feel and regulate temperature, produce numbness and burning sensations and may cause nerve and circulation damage and tissue necrosis.
English / USA !Warning! Edger noise may damage your hearing. Wear sound barriers (ear plugs or ear mufflers) to protect your hearing. Continual and regular users should have their hearing checked regularly. Wear proper protective clothing. Protect your hands with gloves when handling the edger and the cutting tool. Heavy-duty, nonslip gloves improve your grip and protect your hands. Clothing must be sturdy and snug-fitting, but allow complete freedom of movement.
245BA002 KN English / USA Preparation for the use of the edger Adjust carrying harness and hand grip to suit your size before starting work. The machine should be properly balanced as specified in your owner's manual for proper control and less fatigue in operation. Always check your edger for proper condition and operation before starting, particularly the throttle trigger, throttle trigger interlock (and if applicable, stop switch, cutting tool, deflector and harness).
English / USA !Warning! Check for fuel leakage while refueling and during operation. If fuel or oil leakage is found, do not start or run the engine until leak is fixed and spilled fuel has been wiped away. Move at least 10 feet (3 m) from spot of leakage before starting. Take care not to get fuel on your clothing. If this happens, change your clothing immediately. The fuel filler cap may differ on different models.
English / USA Once started, it may fling foreign objects for a great distance. 15m (50ft) When you pull the starter grip, don't wrap the starter rope around your hand. Do not allow the grip to snap back, but guide the starter rope to rewind properly. Failure to follow this procedure may result in injury to hand or fingers and may damage the starter mechanism. Working Conditions To reduce the risk of eye and other injury insure that bystanders are at least 50 feet (15 m) away.
002BA117 KN English / USA Operate the edger under good visibility and daylight conditions only. Work carefully. Always hold the edger firmly with both hands. Wrap your fingers tightly around the handles, keeping the handles cradled between your thumb and forefinger. Keep your hands in this position to have your edger under control at all times. Make sure your edger handles and grip are in good condition and free of moisture, pitch, oil or grease.
English / USA Never use unauthorized parts to secure the blade. Failure to use the proper parts may cause the blade to fly off and seriously injury the operator or bystanders. If the blade continues to loosen, see your STIHL dealer. Do not attach any blade to a unit without proper installation of all required parts. Never use an edger with a loose blade.

English / USA Working Techniques A worn or damaged muffler is a fire hazard and may cause loss of hearing. Check to see that the muffler is in good condition. The edger must not be operated if the muffler is not functioning properly or has been removed. Remember that the risk of forest fires is greater in hot weather. Use the spark arresting muffler supplied with the unit. Never touch a hot muffler or burn will result.

Loosen wingnut (1) counterclockwise : Adjust wheel (2): B Upwards to increase depth of cut (A). Adjust correctly The depth of cut varies, depending on unevenness, your height and the way you hold the edger. Downwards to reduce depth of cut (A).

English / USA Mounting the Loop Handle Adjusting the Throttle Cable* A properly adjusted throttle cable is the precondition for correct operation in the full throttle, starting throttle and idle positions. Adjust the throttle cable only after the unit is fully assembled – the handle must be in the normal operating position. 1 : Fit the loop handle (1) on the drive tube 8" / 20 cm (A) forward of the control handle (2). : Position the clamp (3) against the drive tube and slide it into the loop handle.

English / USA Adjusting the Carburetor Standard Setting H 3/4 : Shut off the engine. Fine Tuning for Operation at High Altitudes : Mount the cutting blade and clean it if necessary (make sure it is not damaged or warped). A slight correction of the setting of the high speed screw (H) may be necessary if engine power is not satisfactory. : Check adjustment of the throttle cable* and readjust if necessary – see "Adjusting the Throttle Cable".
English / USA Spark Arresting Screen* in Muffler Checking the Spark Plug Adjusting Idle Speed It is usually necessary to change the setting of the idle speed screw (LA) after every correction to the low speed screw (L). : Warm up the engine for about 5 minutes. Engine stops while idling Cutting blade rotates when engine is idling : Turn idle speed screw (LA) slowly counterclockwise until cutting blade stops rotating and then turn the screw about another 1/2 to 1 turn in the same direction.
English / USA Lubricating the Gearbox If engine is down on power, difficult to start or runs poorly at idling speed, first check the spark plug. : Clean dirty spark plug. : Check electrode gap (A) and readjust if necessary – see "Specifications". : Use only resistor type spark plugs of the approved range. Rectify problems which have caused fouling of spark plug: : Too much oil in fuel mix. : Dirty air filter. : Unfavorable running conditions, e.g. operating at part load.

Remove the rope rotor very carefully.
English / USA Insert the new rewind spring in the rope rotor and, at the same time, engage the outer spring loop in the rotor’s recess – the wire retainer slips off in this process. If the spring pops out and uncoils, refit it in the counterclockwise direction, starting outside and working inwards. : : Pull the rope through the rotor and secure it with a simple overhand knot. Go to "Installing the rope rotor".
English / USA Storing the Machine Fitting the Starter Cover : Make a loop in the unwound starter rope and use it to turn the rope rotor six full revolutions counterclockwise. Hold the rotor steady – straighten the twisted rope – release the rotor – let go of rope slowly so that it winds onto the rotor. : Check spring tension: – The starter grip must be firmly seated in the rope guide bush. If the grip droops to one side: Add one more turn on rope rotor to increase spring tension.
