3. With your left hand, with your
palm facing up, pull the cocking
slide back to eject any cartridge
that may be in the chamber and
lock it in the rear position by
turning it clockwise and allow-
ing it to rest on the indentation
on the receiver;
4. Visually and manually check to
make sure that no cartridge re-
mains in the chamber;
5. Turn the cocking slide counter-
clockwise with the thumb of
your left hand and allow the
cocking slide and bolt carrier to
move forward from the force of
the recoil spring.

Always pull the cocking
slide back with your palm facing
up as shown in the accompanying
photograph to prevent your knuck-
les from being cut or scraped on
any devices, such as optics, that
may be mounted on the Picatinny
rail of the receiver.
