AccuMeter Controller Chapter 5: Programming a New PLCs IP address 34
Chapter 5: Programming a New PLCs IP
address
The Compact Logix CPU has a built in Ethernet port that is assigned an IP address by running a
utility from Allen Bradley called “BootP/DHCP Server”. This is available for a free download
from www.ab.com. You will need to sign up for a free account and will need to search
downloads to get it.
This can be downloaded from Allen Bradley or provided by ACS upon request.
1. Go to http://www.software.rockwell.com/support/download/
2. Using the drop down menus pick “downloads” and
then click “search”
3. Hit “Cntrl-F” to bring up the search window, type “bootp”, and hit “enter”. This will
highlight the BootP link and you can follow it to download the application
NOTE: IF YOU DO NOT ALREADY HAVE AN AB ACCOUNT (FREE) YOU WILL BE
REQUIRED TO SIGN UP ON THEIR WEBSITE. THIS IS FREE AND DOESN’T
REQUIRE MORE THAN A FEW MINUTES.
Allen Bradley also has support information on their website that details how to use the BootP
server. I have included some step by steps below to help you familiarize yourself with this
procedure. The PLC should come already programmed with the correct IP. The only time you
would need to do this is if you have a catastrophic hardware failure and have to replace the
PLC. You can also request a pre-programmed unit from ACS to make this easier.
