7-5-2 Mechanical Faults
Problem Probable Cause Possible Solution
Bearing overheating Excessive tension on belt drive Check tension of belt, adjust as
necessary. Check lubrication
frequency and the recommended
lubricant (except pre-packed
bearings).
Visible cracks in knives Incorrect grinding procedure or
incorrect grinding wheels
Check method of grinding and
contact an applications engineer.
Uneven knife seat surfaces Clean up to provide maximum
bearing surface.
Loose knife screws Tighten to correct torque.
Knives moving on knife seats
Stretched knife screws Knife screws should not be used
more than six times. Replace if
there is evidence of stretching.
Cracks caused by incorrect
grinding
See above.Knives breaking
Abnormally heavy material Contact an applications engineer.
Open knife setting Reset as detailed in Sections 6-
2-1 and 6-2-2.
Excessive knife wear
Abrasive materials Contact an applications engineer
for an alternate.
Screens breaking Incorrectly seated Check that the screen is seated
correctly and fully on its cradle.
