With a spade: b)
Take out a thin continuous cross-section from a thin spade-full
of soil. Gather ten such samples into a single bucket. Mix well
on a separate support surface. From this mix, take a half litre
and put into a polyethylene bag as described in section a) abo-
ve. For the hobby gardener, samples can be taken with the spade
at ten different locations throughout the soil surface to be tested.
Move the spade slightly to the side and take out a small sample from the
exposed wall of dirt (a spoon can be used to take the sample). Scrape the
soil off by scraping upwards and then fill a polyethylene bag with a half
litre of soil. Package and label as described in section a) above.
