Pulling out soil samples with the Pürckhauer sampler and hammer or with
the 90 cm hand sampler
In some soils – for example those that are rocky – it is not easy to obtain a
90 cm soil sample. In these cases it is often not possible to use hand sam-
plers.
The sample depth is 90 cm. Exceptions to this depth are summer grains, po-
tatoes, tobacco, fruit, vines and strawberries. For these crops, the sample
depth is only 60 cm.
How many samples should be taken per hectare? How should the samples
be scattered? The soil probes taken must represent the entire surface area:
8–15 samples/hectare. The pattern should be diagonal, zigzag or loop.
Für jeden Standort den Erhebungsbogen ausfüllen, Proben in Kunststoffbeu-
tel füllen, verschließen und beschriften.
Removing individual samples with an auger or spade.
With an auger: a)
Stick the auger 30 cm into the soil. Give it a half turn and pull it back out.
The upper 2–3 cm of soil should then be discarded. Collect the remaining
soil in a bucket. A half litre of well-mixed soil originating from 10 to 12
individual sample probes should then all be put into a polyethylene bag.
The bags should then be sealed and labelled with a hanging label. On
the label you should write the name, crop and parcel of land. Fill out the
sample list with the crop details and attach. Close up package and send
priority express.
