LEAKAGE CHECKPOINTS
Neverusethiswaterheaterunlessitiscompletelylledwithwater.
Topreventdamagetothetank,thetankmustbelledwithwater.
Watermustowfromthehotwaterfaucetbeforeturning“ON”gas
to the water heater.
A *Condensationmaybeseenonpipesinhumidweatherorpipe
connectionsmaybeleaking.
B.*Theanoderodttingmaybeleaking.
C.Smallamountsofwaterfromtemperature-pressurereliefvalve
maybeduetothermalexpansionorhighwaterpressureinyour
area.
D.*The temperature-pressure relief valve may be leaking at the
tanktting.
E.Waterfromadrainvalvemaybeduetothevalvebeingslightly
opened.
F.*Thedrainvalvemaybeleakingatthetanktting.
G.Combustionproductscontainwatervaporwhichcancondense
onthecoolersurfacesofthetank.Dropletsformanddriponto
theburner orrunon theoor.Thisiscommon atthetime of
start-upafterinstallationandwhenincomingwateriscold.
H.Waterinthe waterheaterbottomorontheoormaybe from
condensation, loose connections, or the relief valve. DO NOT
replacethewaterheateruntilafullinspectionofallpossiblewater
sourcesismadeandnecessarycorrectivestepstaken.
Leakage from other appliances, water lines, or ground seepage
shouldalsobechecked.
* To check where threaded portion enters tank, insert cotton
swabbetweenjacketopeningandtting.Ifcottoniswet,follow
“Draining”instructionsinthe“PeriodicMaintenance”sectionand
thenremovetting.Putpipedopeorteontapeonthethreads
andreplace.Thenfollow“FillingtheWaterHeater”instructions
inthe“InstallingtheNewWaterHeater”section.

Ifaconditionpersistsoryouareuncertainabouttheoperationof
thewaterheatercontactaqualiedserviceagency.
Usethisguidetochecka“Leaking”waterheater.Manysuspected
“Leakers”arenotleakingtanks.Oftenthesourceofthewatercan
be found and corrected.
Ifyouarenotthoroughlyfamiliarwithgascodes,yourwaterheater,
andsafetypractices,contactyourgassupplierorqualiedinstaller
tocheckthewaterheater.
Readthismanualrst.Thenbeforecheckingthewaterheatermake
surethegassupplyhasbeenturned“OFF”,andneverturnthegas
“ON”beforethetankiscompletelyfullofwater.
