3.2.1 Bit-mappedfonts
StarMicronicshasearnedareputationforattractive,well-designedfontson
its printers,andthislaserprintercontinuesthetradition.
TheStarLaserPrinter4 usesbit-mappedfonts.Eachcharacters madeup
of a patternor “map”of dots,just likecharacterson a dot-matrixprinteror
on yourcomputerscreen.Resolutionmakesthe difference:to makeeach
charactertheStarLaserPrinter4 usesten ortwentytimesas manydotsas
a dot-matrixprinteror computerscreendoes.
Everysizeofprintyouwant,pluseveryitalicorboldfacevecsion,hasitsown
bit map and is normallyconsidereda separatefont.It takesa gooddealof
printermemoryto holdallthefontsyoumightwantatanygivenmoment.
Star Las&Pnnter4 fonts can be groupedinto three categories:internal,
cartridge,anddownloadablefonts.
3.2.2 Internalfonts
TheStarLaserPrinter4 hassevenbuilt-ininternulfontsthatresideperma-
nentlyin its read-onlymemory(ROM).That’s why these are sometimes
called“residentfonts”:

Courieris the faceusedon themostcommonelectrictypewriters.Courier
is not printedwith proportionalspacing.The LinePrinterfont, designed
originallyformainframecomputem,is smallanddesignedto packa lotof
charactersintoeveryinchof print(greatfor spreadsheets).
Withthesemost frequentlyusedfontsin ROM,a pagecan be assembled
muchfasterthanifthefontshadtobeloadedintotheprinterforeachprinting
job.
