You Will Need:
4’x4’ Plywood sheet (preferred ¾” or ½” doubled) 2x4x6” with 1” hole in middle. Phillips Screwdriver.
Ratchet with 9/16 & 7/16 socket. Tape measure. ½” drill bit and drill.
Water Container - 8” tall x 14”wide Plastic Bucket (pool chlorine type) or Plastic tub (dishpan type).
Prepare the Braces:
1. Attach a Bracket to each end of the Braces using the bolts and locking nuts. Tighten only enough to allow the Bracket to swivel.
2. Attach one of the Mounts anywhere on the plywood with the ¾” screws. This will be used to hold the square washers while tightening
the Bracket with the 7/16 socket and will be removed later.
3. On one end of each Brace put a ¾” carriage bolt through a square washer, then through one hole of the Bracket and hand screw a locking
nut onto the bolt.
4. Slide the square washer under the lip of the attached slotted Mount with the Bracket bottom above the lip. Use the 7/16 socket to
tighten down only enough so that the Square Washer can slide out of the Mount.
5. Set aside that Brace and repeat for the other Braces then remove the temporary Mount.
Prepare the Plywood:
Draw lines from each corner and lines from each side. Nail or screw the 2x4x6 so that the 1” hole is over the intersection of the lines.
Attach the Mounts:
1. On the diagonal lines mark a spot 12” from each corner. Attach a Mount in front of those marks using four ¾” screws so that the center
line of the slots aligns with the diagonal lines.
2. On the lines to each edge mark a spot 2” from each edge. Attach a Mount in front of those marks using four ¾” screws so that the center
line of the slot aligns with the edge line.
Move the plywood to the place where the tree will be used before attaching the Braces to the plywood.
Prepare the Water Container:
The Water Container must have at least 2”x2” of smooth surface on both sides of the bottom so that the rubber seals can be compressed.
Pick that spot in the bottom of the Water Container and drill a ½” hole through the bottom.
Prepare the Peg :
1. Place a fresh cut on the end of the trunk.
2. Drill a 3/8” pilot hole about 3” deep into the bottom of the trunk.
3. Place these items on the Lag Bolt in this order: Nylon Spacer, Round steel Washer, Rubber Seal.
4. Push the tip of the Lag Bolt through the ½” hole in the Water Container then slide a rubber seal and then a washer onto the Lag Bolt tip.
5. Screw the Lag Bolt into the pilot hole until it compresses the washers and rubber seals against the trunk forming a watertight seal.
Stand the tree up against a wall and pour about 2” of water into the bowl to check for a watertight seal.
If there is a leak check to see that the seals have been compressed. If no leak shows then empty the water and take the tree to the plywood.
Attach the Braces:
Slide the square washers on the Braces through the slot and under the lip of each Mount. Move the carriage bolt so that it is in the midpoint
of the Mount. Swivel the Brace toward the center of the plywood and tighten the nut.
Place the Tree:
Lift the tree with the Water Container attached and place the exposed Lag Bolt/Nylon Spacer end into the 1” hole of the 2x4.
While the tree is held reasonably straight swivel a corner Brace up toward the trunk so that the Bracket can be attached using a wood screw.
Swivel the opposite corner Brace up and attach. Swivel another corner Brace up toward the trunk and attach then swivel the opposite corner
Brace up and attach.
At this point the tree should be held steady by the four Braces but keep control of the tree until all Braces have been attached.
Check for straightness. If there is any adjustment needed this should be done before the final 4 Braces are attached.
To straighten have someone hold the tree steady while each of the four attached Braces are loosened with the 7/16 socket. Gently move the
tree in the direction needed to straighten.
If a Brace reaches the end of the Mount slot tighten that Brace and then tighten the other 3 Braces where they are on the Mounts. Only re-
move the wood screw from the tree of the Brace that needs more room. Move that Brace so that the carriage bolt is again at the center of the
Mount and tighten.
Reattach the Brace to the tree with the wood screw and resume straightening. Repeat if necessary.
When the tree is straight attach the remaining four Braces to the tree using the wood screws.
Put 2x4 pieces under the edges of the Water Container for support. Pour water into the Water Container, decorate and enjoy your Christmas.
