Title: Pedal Thread Grease vs Blue Threadlocker Considerations

Models: Stages Dual-Sided Pedal, SP2 Pedal, and SP3 Pedal

Introduction:

Stages pedals are currently shipped with blue thread-locking compound on the threads to help prevent

pedals that were not properly tightened from loosening over time.

For existing Stages pedals in the field, we are reiterating the need to apply full torque and achieve full

seating of the spindle against the crank.

With the introduction of our next generation

pedal, we are fully eliminating the thread-locking

compound and recommending only grease be

applied to the threads prior to installation. This

ensures easy installation and tightening of the

threads.

This guide is intended to describe the use and

application of the blue thread-locking

compound and the considerations for producing

new pedals without said compound.

CATEGORY TSB#-07292022 Model Applications: Stages Dual-Sided Pedal, SP2 Pedal, and SP3 Pedal Witnessed Service Concerns: Problems encountered because of thread-locking compound include the following: • Pedals are tightened only a few threads to where threadlocker begins to add resistance. • Wrenches are used sooner for threading pedals with locking compound. This results in cross-threaded crank arms because installer expects resistance when tightening.

CATEGORY TSB#-07292022 APPENDIX A – Pedal Installation Procedure Tools required: 15 mm pedal wrench. While it may be possible to use a hex wrench to attach pedals to the crank, it is not recommended. 1. Match the corresponding pedals to the left and right crank arms. Refer to pedal documentation or the thread direction for help determining which is the right and left pedal. ATTENTION: User-based left pedal threads turn counter-clockwise. User-based right pedal threads turn clockwise.

CATEGORY TSB#-07292022 3. To attach the pedal, begin by hand to thread the spindle into the crank arm to ensure the pedal threads begin without cross-threading. 4. Once each pedal is threaded correctly, use a 15 mm pedal wrench to firmly tighten the pedal. The specified torque is 42 N⋅m (31 ft⋅lb). Note the orientation of left and right pedals and the associated turning direction.
