Owners manual
1982 - 86 CJ’S WILL REQUIRE THE FACTORY CALIPER MOUNTING BOSS TO
BE MACHINED OFF THE SPINDLES.
c) Install the splash shield on the back side of the caliper mounting brackets. The open
side of the shield should point towards the back of the truck and the lip should point
outwards. Secure the shield using the bolts and washers supplied.
6) Installation of Hubs and Rotors
a) Carefully support the hub in a vise and using a hammer drive the original lug studs out
of the hubs. Install the new lug studs from the back side carefully tapping them in with
a hammer. It is not necessary for the studs to be completely bottomed out in the holes
as they will be drawn down when the wheels are tightened.
b) Thoroughly clean the hubs and bearings with brake cleaner. Inspect the bearings for
damage. If they show any signs of damage or wear, they must be replaced.
c) Pack wheel bearings with a good grade of hi-temp disc brake grease. Install inner
wheel bearing into hubs. Install new inner grease seals using a mallet or block of
wood so not to distort seals.
d) Mount hub assembly onto spindle and install greased outer wheel bearing. Insert inner
keyed washer, with key toward outside, over spindle. Install and torque retaining nut to
70-75 ft./lbs. Install outer keyed washer and nut and torque to 70-75 ft./lbs. Make sure
hub turns freely.
e) Clean new rotors with brake cleaner to remove packing material and slide rotors into
place over hubs. Retain with at least one lugnut.
7) Caliper Installation
a) Calipers come loaded with all pads and hardware.
b) Slide calipers over rotor and thread slider bolts into mounting bracket. Torque bolts to
40-50 ft./lbs.
c) Be sure calipers are mounted with bleeder screws pointing up.
d) Connect the block end of the flex hoses to the calipers using the hollow banjo bolts
and copper washers supplied. There must be one copper washer on either side of the
block and the bolt should be torqued to 25 ft / lbs.
e) Connect the other end of the flex hose to the original rigid line at the flame rail.
WITH THE HOSES CONNECTED, TURN THE STEERING FROM LOCK TO LOCK
AND OBSERVE THE HOSES TO MAKE SURE THEY DO NOT BECOME KINKED
OR TAKE A DOUBLE BEND. IF THERE IS A PROBLEM, REORIENT THE HOSE
UNTIL IT TAKES A SMOOTH SINGLE BEND.
8) Master Cylinder
FOR BEST RESULTS, A NEW MASTER CYLINDER MUST BE BENCH BLED
BEFORE INSTALLING. WHEN BENCH BLEEDING, ALWAYS HOLD MASTER
CYLINDER IN A VICE BY THE EARS, NOT THE BODY. BLEEDING IS
ACCOMPLISHED BY FILLING THE RESERVOIR AND RUNNING TEMPORARY
TUBES FROM THE OUTLETS BACK TO THE RESERVOIR. THE PISTON MAY
THEN BE PUMPED USING A “PHILLIPS” SCREWDRIVER UNTIL FLUID FLOWS
WITHOUT AIR BUBBLES.
