Owners manual

TIP: BEFORE BEGINNING INSTALLATION, SPRAY ALL FITTINGS & FASTENERS WITH
PENETRATING OIL.
1) Front Drum Brake Removal
a) Raise the truck until the wheels and tires clear the floor. Support the vehicle on jack
stands and remove the tire and wheel assemblies.
b) Remove the front wheel drive locking knob and drive flange which exposes the spindle
nut. Remove both sets of spindle nuts and tabbed washers using special 2-
1
/16” socket.
c) Pull the hub assembly from the spindle.
d) Remove brake drum from axle. If the brake drum will not come easily, retract shoes by
inserting a narrow screwdriver through the brake adjusting slot in the backing plate.
Back off the adjuster.
2) Drain system of all brake fluid, as follows:
a) Remove master cylinder cover. Use a syringe to remove a much fluid from the master
cylinder reservoir as possible.
b) Attach hoses to front bleeder screws and place other end of hose in a container. Open
bleeder screw.
c) When fluid stops draining, disconnect the flexible hoses from the rigid brake line at the
frame and remove horseshoe clips. Use plenty of penetrating oil between the tube, the
nut and the mating fitting. We strongly recommend the use of a tube wrench, available
from any tool supply store such as Sears. Use vise grips only if necessary.
3) Remove backing plate and shoe assembly, as follows:
a) Remove entire assembly including flexible hose as a unit by removing the six screws
attaching the backing plate to the spindle flange. Save bolts & washers.
4) Remove master cylinder, as follows:
a) Disconnect clevis from brake pedal assembly under dash.
b) Disconnect the brake lines at the master cylinder and cap lines to prevent dirt
ingestion.
c) Remove the nuts that secure the master cylinder to the fire wall and lift the cylinder out
and away from the engine compartment.
BE CAREFUL NOT TO GET BRAKE FLUID ON THE PAINT. IT CAN CAUSE
SEVERE DAMAGE!
5) Installation Caliper Mount Bracket and Splash Shield
a) Slide the caliper mounting bracket over the studs on the knuckle. The brackets should
be installed so the calipers point back towards the fire wall and the side of the bracket
with the countersunk knuckle mounting holes should point out. The driver’s side caliper
will be at the two o’clock position.
b) Secure the brackets using the original fasteners and torque the nuts to 45-50 ft./lbs.
CHECK FOR CLEARANCE BETWEEN THE CALIPER AND THE KNUCKLE.
SOME KNUCKLES MAY REQUIRE MINOR GRINDING FOR PROPER
CLEARANCE.
