On the branch circuit, the following are permitted as the disconnecting means when
installed between the final motor branch circuit short circuit protection and the
motor:
• Any UL 508 switch that is suitable as a motor disconnect (according to NEC
Section 430.81), which is used to start and stop a motor
• A manual motor controller that is suitable as a motor disconnect (according to
NEC Section 430.109)
