pyderco developed its Ethnic Series of knives to honor the world’s many distinctive cultural knives. In addition to paying tribute to widely recognized ethnic
blade styles, our goal is to showcase cultural knives, their qualities, and the significance they hold to the societies that created them.
Although many knife companies have simply reproduced native knife patterns, Spyderco has chosen to honor these amazing designs by expressing them in
the form of modern, fully-functional knives—often folders—crafted with the latest state-of-the-art materials. This demanding format challenges our skills and
manufacturing convention, in the process yielding a unique family of knives and an increased understanding and appreciation for the tools that inspired them.
W
idely known by its nickname “carraca,” the Navaja is a centuries-
old traditional Spanish folding knife with a audible ratcheting-
style blade lock. Translated into a state-of-the-art folder by knifemaker
Ed Schempp, Spyderco’s Navaja features a clip-point blade ground
from CPM S30V stainless steel. It is matched with a machined handle
constructed of stainless steel liners and bolsters, topped off with dovetail-
jointed carbon fiber/G-10 laminate scales. The blade locks open with a
Walker LinerLock
®
mechanism, who’s unique detent system produces a
ratcheting sound, replicating the signature “carraca” snapping sound
that announces the presence of a traditional Navaja folder.
T
he latest edition to Spyderco’s unique Ethnic Series of knives, the
Hungarian Folder pays homage to the traditional pocketknives of
Hungary. Designed by Hungarian architect and knife enthusiast Gábor
Szakonyi, this beautiful knife faithfully captures the graceful lines of the
traditional “fejesgörbe” (header curved) folding knife, as well as the spirit
of quality that typifies Hungarian folk art. Featuring Walker LinerLock
®
construction, full stainless steel liners, sculpted stainless steel bolsters,
polished G-10 scales, and a full-flat-ground CTS™ XHP blade, this
extraordinary knife represents a powerful link between traditional artistry
and state-of-the-art manufacturing.
