Creating and
Editing Charts
You can create and edit a wide variety of chart types in SPSS. In these examples, we
will create
and edit three commonly used types of charts:
Simple bar
chart
Pie chart
Scatterpl
ot with groups
Chart Creation Basics
To demonstrate the basics of chart creation, we will create a bar chart of mean income
for differ
ent levels of job satisfaction. This example uses the data file demo.sav.

In the Bar Charts dialog box, you specify what type of bar chart you want to create
and what data to use in the chart.
In this exa
mple,wewillcreateasimplechartusing groups of cases. The resulting
chart will show a bar for each group (category) in a single categorical variable.
Bars can also be based on summaries of separate variables (so that each variable
is a bar) or
values from individual cases in the data file (so that each case is a bar).
You can also create a clustered or stacked bar chart. With these charts, there are
multiple categorical variables.
