3 Using the WLAN and Bluetooth radios
Connecting to a WLAN access point
To use WLAN on the MobileMapper 50 handheld, you must access a wireless access point,
or “hotspot.” Some hotspots are open and you can easily connect to them. Others are
hidden or implement other security features, so you must configure the handheld so it can
connect to them.
The Status bar displays icons that indicate WLAN status.
When you connect to a WLAN network, the handheld obtains a network address and
other information it needs from the network. If required, you can configure the handheld
with advanced settings; see Advanced WLAN settings below.
To turn on the WLAN radio and connect to a WLAN network:
1. In the Apps screen, tap Settings.
2. Make sure WLAN is turned on. If it is not, move the WLAN slider to ON.
3. Tap WLAN. The handheld lists the WLAN networks available. Secured networks are
indicated with a Lock icon.
4. If the handheld finds a network that you connected to previously, it connects to it.
Otherwise, tap the network that you want to connect to.
l If the network is open, you are prompted to confirm that you want to connect to
the network. Tap Connect.
l If the network is secured, you’re prompted to enter a password or other details.
To view details about the speed, security, address, and related settings of the network you
are connected to, in the WLAN settings screen, tap the network name.
By default, when the WLAN radio is on, notifications appear in the Status bar when the
handheld detects an open WLAN network. To receive notifications when open networks
are in range, in the WLAN settings screen, tap , tap Advanced and then turn on Network
notification.
Adding a WLAN network
You can add a WLAN network so the handheld remembers it, along with any security
details. You can then connect to it automatically when it is in range. You must also add a
WLAN network to connect to it if the network does not broadcast its name (SSID), or to add
a WLAN network when you are out of its range.
To join a secured network, you must obtain the security details from the network’s
administrator.
