Getting started The instructions in this User guide, unless otherwise stated, are written on the basis that you access your phone's functions from the default Home screen. If you set Timescape™ or another application as your home screen, the instruction path may differ. Important information Please read the Important information leaflet before you use your mobile phone.
To insert the battery 1 2 Insert the battery with the label side up and the connectors facing each other. Attach the battery cover. Turning the phone on and off The first time you turn on the phone, the Welcome menu appears. 1 2 3 To turn on the phone Press and hold down the key on the top of the phone. Enter your SIM card PIN, if requested, and select OK. At first startup, follow the instructions in the Welcome menu. Your PIN is supplied by your network operator.
Social web services You can use your phone with many web based services, for example, social networking and media sharing. • • You can set up your Facebook™ and Twitter™ accounts to use them with Sony Ericsson Timescape™ and your phone contacts. See Facebook ™ and Twitter™ setup on page 36. You can share photos and videos using a number of web services. See Setting up accounts for online services on page 64.

Yellow The battery is charging. The level is between low and full The LED is turned off when charging is completed. Sensors Your phone has two built-in sensors – a light sensor and a proximity sensor. The light sensor is used for automatic LCD backlight control. The proximity sensor turns the touch screen off when your face touches the screen. This prevents you from unintentionally activating phone functions when you are engaged in a call.

Using the touch screen • To open or highlight an item Tap the item. • To zoom When available, tap or to zoom in or out. You may have to drag the screen (in any direction) to make the zoom icons appear. • To pan When this option is available, drag the screen to pan. • To mark or unmark options Tap the relevant checkbox or radio button to mark or unmark an option.
To scroll • Drag up or down to scroll. • Flick to scroll quickly. You can wait for the scrolling to come to a stop or you can stop it immediately by tapping the screen. Orientation When you turn the phone sideways, the screen orientation changes automatically between portrait and landscape view. You can also set the phone to stay in portrait orientation by disabling the automatic orientation setting.
• To jump directly to an index letter From any list with index letters, tap the letter you want to select on the index.
• To enter numbers using the keyboard When you enter text, tap . A keyboard with numbers appears. • To shift between upper-case and lower-case letters Before you enter a letter, tap . • To turn on the Caps lock Before you type a word, tap 1 2 To enter symbols using the keyboard When you enter text, tap . Notification panel Notification icons are displayed in a detailed view. You can open notifications, such as messages, reminders, or event notifications directly from the Notification panel. To open the Notification panel • Drag the status bar downwards. "YouTube" Share and view videos from all over the world Some applications are not supported by all networks and/or service providers in all areas. You can also download new applications. They will also appear on the Applications screen. Recently used applications window You can view and access recently used applications from this window. • To open the recently used applications window From any application, press and hold down . messages to the memory card for backup purposes. Contacts can also be saved on the SIM card. Memory card You may have to purchase a memory card separately. Your phone supports a microSD™ memory card, which is used for media content. This type of card can also be used as a portable memory card with other compatible devices. Without a memory card you cannot use the camera, nor can you play or download music files and video clips.
Advanced network settings 1 2 3 4 To change network mode From the Home screen, tap the applications bar. Tap Settings > Wireless controls > Mobile networks. Tap Network Mode. Select your preferred network mode. Data roaming Depending on your network operator, it might be possible to allow mobile data connections via 2G/3G outside of your home network (roaming). Please note that data transmission charges may apply. Contact your network operator for more information.
Home screen The Home screen is the starting point of your phone. You can personalise the Home screen by adding, for example, applications, shortcuts and widgets, or by changing the wallpaper. The Home screen extends beyond the screen width, giving you more space to personalise. When you go to the Home screen, some applications may continue to run in the background. If you do not want applications to run in the background, you should exit each application you have opened before going to the Home screen.
1 2 3 To rename a folder Tap the folder to open it. Touch and hold the folder's title bar to open the Rename folder dialog box. Enter the Folder name and tap OK. 1 2 3 To add widgets to the Home screen Touch and hold on the Home screen until the Add to Home screen menu appears. Tap Widgets. Select an option. 1 2 To create a shortcut from the applications screen From the Home screen, tap the applications bar. Touch and hold an application until it appears on the Home screen.
Calling Emergency calls Your phone supports international emergency numbers, for example, 112 or 911. You can normally use these numbers to make emergency calls in any country, with or without the SIM card inserted, if you are within range of a network. 1 2 To make an emergency call From the Home screen, tap Dialer. Enter the emergency number and tap "Call". To delete a number, tap . You can make an emergency call without a SIM card inserted.
2 To enter numbers during a call During a call, drag the icon (at the bottom of the screen) upwards. A keypad appears. Enter numbers. • To mute the ringtone for an incoming call When you receive the call, press the volume key. 1 Recent calls In the call log, you can view recently missed , received 2 To view missed calls When you have missed calls, downwards. Tap Missed call. 1 2 To call a number from the call log From the Home screen, tap Dialer > Call log. Tap next to the desired number.
• To answer a second call and put the ongoing call on hold When you hear repeated beeps during a call, tap "Answer". 1 2 3 To make a second call During an ongoing call, press , then tap . Enter the number of the recipient and tap "Call". If the recipient answers, the first call is put on hold. The same procedure applies to subsequent calls. • To switch between multiple calls To switch to the next call and put the current call on hold, tap "Swap calls".
1 2 3 4 To turn off call forwarding From the Home screen, tap the applications bar, then tap Settings. Tap Call settings > GSM call settings > Call forwarding. Select an option. Tap Disable. Showing or hiding your phone number You can select to show or hide the phone number that is displayed on call recipients' devices when you call them. 1 2 3 To show or hide your phone number From the Home screen, tap the applications bar, then tap Settings. Tap Call settings > GSM call settings > Caller ID.
Contacts In "Phonebook", you can enter all your information for your personal contacts, for example, phone numbers, email adresses and web service accounts. When you view a contact, you get quick access to all communication with that contact. • • To view your contacts From the Home screen, tap the applications bar, then tap "Phonebook". From the Home screen, tap Dialer > Contacts The first time you open "Phonebook", a setup wizard starts.
1 2 1 2 3 4 To search for a contact From the Home screen, tap the applications bar, then tap "Phonebook". Enter the first few letters of the contact name in the search field. All contacts beginning with those letters appear. To edit a contact From the Home screen, tap the applications bar, then tap "Phonebook". Tap the contact you want to edit. Tap "Edit". Edit the desired information and tap Save. 4 To delete contacts From the Home screen, tap the applications bar, then tap "Phonebook".
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 To link a Facebook or Twitter contact to a phone contact From the Home screen, tap the applications bar, then tap "Phonebook". Tap the contact. Tap "Edit". Tap next to "Link contact". Select "Facebook" or "Twitter". A list of your Twitter or Facebook contacts appears. Select the contact you want to link to the phone contact. Tap Save to confirm.
1 2 3 To import contacts from the SIM card From the Home screen, tap the applications bar, then tap "Phonebook". Press , then tap More > Import contacts > "SIM card". To import one contact, tap the contact, then edit the contact information and tap Save. SMS and MMS Before using SMS and MMS You can send text messages from your phone using SMS (Short Message Service). If your subscription includes MMS (Multimedia Messaging Service), you can also send and receive multimedia messages that contain pictures, videos and music. You can also send multimedia messages to an email address. To send multimedia messages, you need the correct MMS settings in the phone. See Settings for calling, messaging and the Internet on page 6.
1 2 3 4 To change the download settings for received multimedia messages From the Home screen, tap the applications bar, then tap Messaging. Press , then tap Settings. If you want received multimedia messages to be downloaded automatically, mark the Auto-retrieve checkbox. If you also want received multimedia messages do be downloaded automatically when roaming, mark the Roaming auto-retrieve checkbox.
Email You can use your phone to send and receive emails through your regular email account. First, you need the correct Internet settings in your phone. See Settings for calling, messaging and the Internet on page 6. You can set up a Microsoft® Exchange ActiveSync® synchronisation by using the Moxier™ Sync application in your phone. You can then use the Moxier™ Mail application in your phone with an email account on a Microsoft® Exchange Server. See www.moxier.com for more information.
1 2 3 4 5 To reply to an email message From the Home screen, tap the applications bar, then tap Email. If you have several accounts, select the account that received the relevant message. Tap the message you want to reply to. Tap Reply or Reply all. Enter text and tap Send. 5 To forward an email message From the Home screen, tap the applications bar, then tap Email. If you have several accounts, select the account that received the relevant message. Touch and hold the message, then tap Forward.
Facebook ™ and Twitter™ setup You can set up your Facebook and Twitter accounts to work in your phone. You can then update your status or view posts from your contacts in Sony Ericsson Timescape™ and in "Phonebook". If you do not already have a Facebook account, you can sign up on www.facebook.com. If you do not already have a Twitter account, you can sign up on www.twitter.com.
Sony Ericsson Timescape™ Sony Ericsson Timescape™ revolutionises your social experience by collecting all your communications into one view. Every event - text, multimedia and email messages, Facebook or Twitter updates - appears as a tile in a chronological flow on the screen. You can see a snack-size preview of an event before choosing to view the full content. With the infinite button, you can view all communications for a contact.
1 2 3 4 5 To delete a tile in Timescape™ Tap the tile. Drag the tile until appears at the bottom of the screen. Drag the tile to the icon and wait until the icon is activated. Release the tile. Tap "OK".
The infinite button in Timescape™ When you tap a tile, the infinite button appears in the upper right corner (except for a recently taken video). If the tile is connected to a phone contact, you can access related content by tapping the infinite button.
1 2 3 To view related photo album material for a recently taken photo From the Home screen, tap "Timescape™". Tap a tile for a recently taken photo or video, then tap . You can filter the displayed photos by "Same date", "Same location", or by contact name. The phone will display as related content other photos which are tagged with the same contact names, date or location. Related photos are displayed for a maximum of five contacts.
1 2 3 1 2 3 1 Application shortcuts 2 Applications bar To set Timescape™ as your home screen From the Home screen, tap "Timescape™". Press , then tap "Settings". Mark the checkbox "Set as home". To change the application shortcuts when Timescape™ is your home screen From the Timescape™ home screen, tap the applications bar. The application shortcuts appear in the upper part of the screen. Touch and hold the shortcut you want to remove, then drag it downwards and release it among the other applications.
Google™ Talk You can use Google Talk instant messaging in your phone to chat with friends who also use this application. To use Google Talk, you need the correct Internet settings in your phone. See Settings for calling, messaging and the Internet on page 6. 1 2 To start Google Talk From the Home screen, tap the applications bar, then tap Google Talk. If required, enter your name and password and tap Sign in. 1 2 To reply to an instant message with Google Talk appears in the status bar.
Calendar Your phone has a calendar for managing your time schedule. If you have Sony Ericsson Synchronisation or a Google account, you can also synchronise the phone calendar with your web calendar. See Synchronising and handling content on page 7. You can set up a Microsoft® Exchange ActiveSync® synchronisation by using the Moxier™ Sync application in your phone. You can then use the Moxier™ Calendar application in your phone with a calendar on a Microsoft® Exchange Server. See www.moxier.
Synchronising Synchronising between your phone and computer is an easy and practical way of keeping track of the same contacts, messages, calendar events on your computer as well as in your phone. It is possible to synchronise your phone in several different ways, depending on your preferred service and what content you want to synchronise. It is possible to use Sony Ericsson sync to synchronise contacts and calendar events, and to use Google sync to synchronise your Google™ email, calendar and contacts.

Toggle between the two tabs and edit the information needed. Press . Touch and hold the synchronisation item. Tap Edit.
7 8 To set up automatic synchronisations in Google sync From the Home screen, tap the applications bar. Tap Settings > "Synchronise data". Tap "Google sync". Mark the Background data checkbox. Mark the Auto-sync checkbox. Mark the checkboxes for the synchronisation items you want to synchronise automatically. Press . Mark the checkbox to enable automatic synchronisation for Google Mail™ . 1 2 To stop synchronisation in Google sync When synchronising, press . Tap Cancel sync.
Wi-Fi™ Using Wi-Fi™ you can access the Internet wirelessly with your phone. Before using Wi-Fi™ To be able to browse the Internet using a Wi-Fi™ connection you need to search for and connect to an available Wi-Fi network and then open the Internet browser. The signal strength of the Wi-Fi network may differ depending on your phone's location. Moving closer to the Wi-Fi router might enhance the signal strength. 1 2 3 To turn on Wi-Fi™ From the Home screen, tap the applications bar.
Advanced Wi-Fi™ settings Before you add a Wi-FI™ network manually, you need to turn on the Wi-Fi setting in your phone. 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 To add a Wi-Fi™ network manually From the Home screen, tap the applications bar. Tap Settings > Wireless controls > Wi-Fi settings. Tap Add Wi-Fi network. Enter the Network SSID name of the Wi-Fi network you want to add. Tap the Security field to select a security type for the Wi-Fi network you want to add.
Web browser The web browser in your phone is fully optimised and comes with advanced functionality such as wireless web and Google Search™. You must have a Wi-Fi or an active 2G/3G mobile data connection to access the Internet. Before using the Internet Your phone allows you to access the Internet using a Wi-Fi connection, or using a 2G/3G mobile data connection.
1 2 3 4 1 2 To switch between browser windows From the Browser screen, press and tap Windows. On the Current windows screen, tap the browser window you want to view. To open a new web page, tap New window. To close a browser window, tap on the browser window you want to close. To zoom in or out on a web page Drag your finger in any direction on the screen to activate the zoom controls on the web page. Tap a zoom icon.
• 1 2 3 4 5 To view your downloads From the Browser screen, press and tap More > Downloads. To manage links in web pages Open the web page where you want to manage the links. Tap the link to open the web page. The links get enclosed in an orange box when selected. Touch and hold the link to open a menu that allows you to open, bookmark, save, copy to the clipboard or share the link via email.
Applications and games You can access applications and games using the Android™ Market application store. Using Applications You can install applications in your phone from sources other than Android™ Market. You can view and adjust settings for your installed applications. Many applications come with a wizard that helps you to install the application. Note: Applications downloaded from websites other than Android™ Market could be of unknown or unreliable origin.
Transferring and handling content You can transfer and handle content such as pictures and music. You may not be allowed to exchange some copyright-protected material. Using a USB cable You can connect your phone to a computer with a USB cable, and then manually mount the memory card of your phone to the computer from the phone menu. You can then drag and drop content between your phone and a computer.
1 2 3 4 5 To turn on the Bluetooth™ function and make the phone visible From the Home screen, tap the applications bar. Tap Settings > Wireless controls. Mark the Bluetooth checkbox. will be displayed in the status bar. Tap Bluetooth settings. Mark the Discoverable checkbox. The phone will now be visible to other devices for 120 seconds. Phone name You can enter a name for your phone that is shown to other devices when using Bluetooth™ wireless technology.
1 2 3 4 To disconnect a Bluetooth™ device From the Home screen, tap the applications bar. Tap Settings > Wireless controls > Bluetooth settings. In the Bluetooth devices list, touch and hold the name of the connected Bluetooth device. Tap Disconnect. Even if you disconnect a Bluetooth device, the device is still paired with your phone. To remove the pairing, you need to tap Disconnect & unpair. 1 2 3 4 To unpair a Bluetooth™ device From the Home screen, tap the applications bar.
Sony Ericsson Mediascape With Sony Ericsson Mediascape you have one place for all your media content. You can browse media by the categories music, video and photo. You can use Sony Ericsson Mediascape to browse local media content on your memory card such as music, audiobooks, podcasts, photos, and videos. You can also access online content, for example, by browsing and purchasing music from the PlayNow™ service, or by exploring related content on the YouTube™ service.
Stereo portable handsfree • To use a handsfree Connect a portable handsfree. Music stops when you receive a call and resumes when the call has ended. If a portable handsfree is not included with the phone, you may purchase it separately. If you are using regular headphones without a microphone, you have to remove the headphones from the headset connector to be able to answer the call.
Music in Sony Ericsson Mediascape You can browse and listen to your music, audio books and podcasts using Sony Ericsson Mediascape. You can also purchase music from online services (if available) using Sony Ericsson Mediascape. Use the Media Go™ application to transfer content to and from the memory card in your phone. For more information, see Transferring and handling content on page 53. 1 2 3 4 To browse audio content on your memory card From the Home screen, tap "Mediascape".
If your country of residence does not support the PlayNow™ service, your operator may provide an alternative service, or services. If there is no alternative service, automatically generated playlists appear in the lower part of the music home screen in Sony Ericsson Mediascape. You can check with your network operator for alternative service, or services. For more information on PlayNow™, go to www.sonyericsson.com/support.

If the music home screen is not shown, tap "Music" . Press and tap Get album art. Sony Ericsson Mediascape tries to find album art for all albums which do not already have album art. You can also get album art for a single track or album by selecting Get album art from the music player.
1 2 3 4 To copy playlists to your memory card Start the Media Go™ application on your computer. Connect the phone to the computer using the USB cable. Locate the memory card in the Media Go™ application. Copy existing playlists from your computer to the memory card by dragging and dropping the playlists. Podcasts Podcasts are media content, for example, radio programs or TV shows, which you can subscribe to using web feeds.
Photos in Sony Ericsson Mediascape You can browse and view your pictures and camera photos using Sony Ericsson Mediascape. Use the Media Go™ application to transfer content to and from the memory card in your phone. For more information, see Transferring and handling content on page 53. 1 2 3 4 To browse your photos From the Home screen, tap "Mediascape". PlayNow™ With the PlayNow™ application in your phone, you can browse, purchase and download your favourite music. You can listen to the music before you purchase and download it to your phone. Before using PlayNow™ Before you start using the PlayNow™ application, check that: • • You have a memory card in your device. You have a phone subscription that supports Wi-Fi or 2G/3G data transmission. The PlayNow™ service is not available in all countries or on all networks.
A premium SMS is a text message which incurs an extra charge compared to that of standard text message. Operators invoice you for premium SMS on the monthly bill or deduct the amount automatically from your prepaid account. Using the still camera 1 2 3 4 5 To take a photo by tapping the screen Activate the camera. If the still camera is not selected, tap . Tap the capturing settings key in the viewfinder. Tap . Tap a spot in the viewfinder where you want the focus to be. The photo is taken as soon as focus is set. Smile detection Smile detection allows you to capture a face just as it smiles. The camera detects up to five faces and selects one face for smile detection and auto focus. A yellow frame shows which face is selected. When the selected face smiles, the camera automatically takes a photo. 1 2 3 4 1 2 3 To set smile detection Activate the camera. "2MP 16:9" 2 megapixel picture size with 16:9 aspect ratio. Has a higher resolution than full HD. Suitable for photos you want to view on widescreen displays "Scenes" Use Scenes to quickly set up the camera for common situations using pre-programmed scenes. The camera has determined a number of settings for you to fit the selected scene, ensuring the best possible photo "Normal" The camera automatically adjusts settings for a photo "Portrait" Use for portrait photos. Face detection is turned on.
The photo light is turned off. Sometimes photo quality can be better without a light, even if lighting conditions are poor. Taking a good photo without using the light requires a steady hand. You can use the self-timer to avoid a blurred photo "Self-timer" With the self-timer you can take a photo without holding the phone. Use it to take self-portraits, or group photos where everyone can be in the photo.
"Geotag" Tag photos with details of where you took them "On" When turned on, the approximate geographical location is added to photos when you take them. This information can later be used to identify the location where the photo was taken.

"Night mode" When turned on, light sensitivity is increased. Use in poorly lit environments. Videos of fast-moving objects may get blurred. Hold your hand steady, or use a support. Turn off night mode when lighting conditions are good, to improve the video quality "Beach and snow" Use in bright environments to avoid underexposed videos "Sports" Use for videos of fast-moving objects. Short exposure time minimises motion blurring "Party" Use for indoor videos in poorly lit environments.
Adjust the colour balance for bright lighting such as under light bulbs, or when lighting conditions change quickly "Fluorescent" Adjust the colour balance for fluorescent lighting "Daylight" Adjust the colour balance for bright outdoor use "Cloudy" Adjust the colour balance for a cloudy sky "Image stabiliser" When recording a video, it can be difficult to hold the phone steady.
Updating your phone You can update your phone to the most recent software for optimal performance and to get the latest enhancements. Updates can be downloaded wirelessly directly from your phone via the Internet by using a 2G/3G mobile data connection, or by using a Wi-Fi network connection. You can also download updates from the Update service application on your computer, by connecting the phone and computer with a USB cable.
Location services There are two ways to find your location, using Mobile networks or GPS technology. Mobile networks technology determines your position fast but accuracy may vary. If you use GPS technology it may take a little longer, but it will find your exact position. You can enable both Mobile networks and GPS to benefit from both technologies when trying to find your position. GPS Your phone has a GPS receiver that uses satellite signals to calculate your location.
is shown using information from nearby mobile towers. Your location is updated with a more precise position when the GPS receiver finds your location. Make sure you enable the location settings before trying to get your position. Locking and protecting your phone IMEI number Keep a copy of your IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) number in case your phone is stolen. To view your IMEI number • You can find the IMEI number under the battery. SIM card protection This lock only protects your subscription. Your phone will work with a new SIM card. If the lock is on, you have to enter a PIN (Personal Identity Number).
Screen lock pattern You can secure your data by locking the screen or by using a screen unlock pattern every time your phone is turned on or every time it is activated from sleep mode. 1 2 3 To create a screen unlock pattern From the Home screen, press . Troubleshooting Common questions My phone is not working as expected If you experience problems with your phone, check these tips before you try anything else: • • • • Restart your phone. Remove and re-insert the battery and SIM card. Then restart your phone. Update your phone. Regardless if you have the latest software, running Update Service can improve the software stability and solve problems. Updating your phone will also make sure you get an optimal performance and the latest enhancements.
Error messages No network coverage • • • Your phone is in flight mode. See To turn on Airplane mode on page 19 for more information. Your phone is not receiving any network signal, or the received signal is too weak. Contact your network operator and make sure that the network has coverage where you are. The SIM card is not working properly. Insert your SIM card in another phone. If this works, it is probably your phone that is causing the problem.
