Whenever possible, you should attempt to take account of the following ergonomic considerations to both stationary and portable environments: ❑ Position of your computer – Place the computer directly in front of you (1). Keep your forearms horizontal (2), with your wrists in a neutral, comfortable position (3) while using the keyboard or touchpad.

You can also purchase accessories for your display that help reduce glare. Proper lighting adds to your comfort and work effectiveness. ❑ Positioning an external display – When using an external display, set the display at a comfortable viewing distance.

n N 17 Hardware Guide Using your VAIO computer Connecting a power source You can use either an AC adapter or a rechargeable battery pack as a power source. Using the AC adapter To use the AC adapter, proceed as follows: 1 Plug the cable attached to the AC adapter (1) into the DC In connector (2) on the computer or on the docking station if you are using one. 2 Plug one end of the power cord (3) into the AC adapter. 3 Plug the other end of the power cord into an AC outlet (4).
n N 18 Hardware Guide Using your VAIO computer Using the battery pack Check the Specifications sheet for the life time of your battery. Additional battery packs are available as a separate option. The battery pack supplied with your computer is not fully charged at the time of purchase. A tool is installed on your machine to check if you use a genuine Sony battery designed for this model. n N 19 Hardware Guide Using your VAIO computer Inserting the battery pack To insert the battery pack, proceed as follows: 1 Slide the lock lever (1) on the bottom of the computer to the UNLOCK position. 2 Slide the release lever (2) on the bottom of the computer to the RELEASE position. 3 Remove the battery compartment cover. 4 Slide the battery into the battery compartment cover.
n N 20 Hardware Guide Using your VAIO computer Charging the battery pack To charge the battery pack, proceed as follows: 1 Connect the AC adapter to the computer or docking station. 2 Insert the battery pack. The computer automatically charges the battery (the battery indicator light flashes in a double blink pattern as the battery charges). ✍ Battery indicator light status Meaning On The computer is using battery power. Single blink The battery is running out of power.
n N 21 Hardware Guide Using your VAIO computer Removing the battery pack To remove the battery pack, proceed as follows: 1 Turn off the computer. 2 Slide the lock lever (1) on the bottom of the computer to the UNLOCK position. 3 Slide the release lever (2) on the bottom of the computer to the RELEASE position. 4 Remove the battery compartment cover. 5 Remove the battery from the compartment. 6 Slide the battery compartment cover back over the battery compartment.
n N 22 Hardware Guide Using your VAIO computer Setting up your computer with Sony Notebook Setup The Sony Notebook Setup utility allows you to consult system information, specify preferences for system behaviour, and set up password protection for your VAIO computer. To use Sony Notebook Setup, proceed as follows: 1 Click the Start button on the Windows taskbar. 2 In All Programs, select Sony Notebook Setup and then click Sony Notebook Setup. The Sony Notebook Setup window appears.
n N 23 Hardware Guide Using your VAIO computer Tab Description Docking Station/Port replicator (depending on your model) You can select if you want the digital and/or analogue output to the speaker and the optical out on the docking station/port replicator. Bass boost Turns the Bass Boost function on/off (only with headphones). You can also check the effect of the Bass Boost function by selecting a sound file sample and playing it.
n N 24 Hardware Guide Using your VAIO computer Shutting down your computer safely It is important that you shut down your computer properly so you do not lose unsaved data. To shut down your computer, proceed as follows: 1 Turn off any peripherals connected to your computer. 2 Click the Start button. 3 Click Turn Off Computer. The Turn off computer window appears. 4 Click Turn Off.
n N 25 Hardware Guide Using your VAIO computer Using the keyboard Your keyboard is very similar to a standard computer keyboard, but has additional keys that perform specific notebook-related tasks. For more information on the standard keys, please go to Windows Help and Support Center > Start > Help and Support. The VAIO-Link website (www.vaio-link.com) also contains glossary information to help you use the keyboard.
n N 26 Hardware Guide Using your VAIO computer Troubleshooting sound My speakers are not producing sound ❑ The built in speakers may be turned off. Press the Mute button at the front right of your computer to turn on the speakers. ❑ The speaker volume may be turned down low. Press the Volume up button to increase the volume. ❑ If your computer is powered by battery, check that the battery is inserted properly and that it is charged.
n N 27 Hardware Guide Using your VAIO computer Indicators Indicator Functions Power Power on: lights green. Standby mode: flashes umber. Battery Indicates the status of the battery. Wireless LAN Turns on when the Wireless LAN is activated. Turns off when the Wireless LAN is not activated. Bluetooth indicator (depending on your model) Turns blue when the Bluetooth functionality is available. Memory Stick PRO Turns on when the u is in use. Turns off when the Memory Stick is no longer in use.
n N 28 Hardware Guide Using your VAIO computer Using the touchpad The keyboard features a touchpad (1), which controls the cursor on the screen. You can point to, select, drag, and scroll objects on the screen using the built-in touchpad. Action Description Point Slide one finger on the touchpad to place the pointer (2) on an item or object. Click Press the left button (3) once. Double-click Press the left button twice. Right-click Press the right button (4) once.
n N 29 Hardware Guide Using your VAIO computer Using the TV function Your VAIO is equipped with a TV tuner board. The special docking station delivered with certain models* features a TV tuner board.
n N 30 Hardware Guide Using your VAIO computer Using the mouse Depending on your model, your computer is delivered with a wireless optical mouse*, which has no cables to plug in and uses a light-emitting diode (LED) instead of a ball. You can use the mouse anywhere you feel comfortable within a range of approx. 80 cm** of the main unit. Avoid using the mouse on a piece of glass or other transparent material, as this can interfere with smooth cursor movement on the screen.
n N 31 Hardware Guide Using your VAIO computer Before you use the mouse Before attempting to use the wireless mouse, you must enable communication between the computer and the mouse. Two AA batteries, specific for use in the wireless mouse, are supplied with your VAIO. They are identified by a sticker "For mouse" on the packaging. To connect the wireless mouse, proceed as follows: 1 Insert the two specific AA batteries into the wireless mouse as shown. 2 Turn on the computer.
n N 32 Hardware Guide 4 ✍ Using your VAIO computer Turn the wireless mouse over, slide the power button to the ON position and press the CONNECT button. Communication between the wireless mouse and the computer is now active. Steps 3 and 4 must be carried out within 10 seconds of each other. If your wireless mouse does not operate properly, the batteries may need to be replaced.
n N 33 Hardware Guide Using your VAIO computer Using special buttons Your computer is provided with special buttons to help you use the computer by way of shortcuts. ❑ Mute button : Turn off/on the volume by pressing the Mute button. The LED turns on when muted. ❑ Volume buttons (Volume up and Volume down) You can increase and decrease the volume. ❑ Brightness button : : You can increase and decrease the brightness intensity. When the screen is on maximum brightness intensity, the LED turns on.

n N 35 Hardware Guide Using the disc drive Your computer is equipped with a double layer DVD±RW drive, which reads data from a compatible CD or DVD and writes data to a DVD-RW, DVD+RW, DVD-R, DVD+R, CD-RW, or CD-R. To insert a disc, proceed as follows: 1 Turn on the computer. 2 Press the eject button (1) to open the drive. The tray slides out. 3 Place a disc in the middle of the tray with the label side facing up until the disc clicks into place. 4 Close the tray by pushing it gently.
n N 36 Hardware Guide Using your VAIO computer Reading and writing CDs and DVDs To achieve optimum performance when writing data on to disc (also called ’burning’), follow these recommendations: ❑ To make the data on a disc readable on an optical drive, you need to close the burning software when you eject it. To complete this process, follow the instructions included with your software. ❑ Only use circular discs. Do not use discs with any other shape (star, heart, card, etc.
n N 37 Hardware Guide Using your VAIO computer Playing DVDs To achieve optimum performance when playing DVDs, you should follow these recommendations. ❑ Play DVDs using the optical drive and the WinDVD for VAIO or the VAIO Zone software. See the help file on the WinDVD for VAIO software for details. ❑ Close all open applications before playing a DVD movie. ❑ Do not use resident disc utilities or resident utilities to speed up discs, because they may cause the system to become unstable.
n N 38 Hardware Guide Using your VAIO computer Troubleshooting discs If you have problems with discs, check the printed Guide to Troubleshooting and Recovering your VAIO System and the VAIOLink website (www.vaio-link.com). My disc drive tray does not open If the eject button does not work try the following: ❑ Click Start, and select My Computer. Right-click the optical disc drive and select 'If the eject button does not work try the following.
n N 39 Hardware Guide Using your VAIO computer I cannot play a DVD ❑ If a region code warning appears when you are using the DVD player, it could be that the DVD you are trying to play is incompatible with the DVD drive on your computer. The region code is listed on the packaging of the disc. ❑ Change the resolution under Control Panel - Display to a lower resolution. ❑ If you see video but cannot hear sound, check all of the following: ❑ Make sure the mute setting is off on your DVD player.
n N 40 Hardware Guide Using your VAIO computer I cannot play a DVD when using two screens ❑ You will not have a problem in the following situations: ❑ When you use a CRT or an LCD display on its own. ❑ When you play MPEG files which are recorded on the hard drive with Windows Media Player 9. The reading speed of CD/DVD-RWs is very slow Generally, the reading speed of a CD/DVD-RW is slower than that of a -ROM or -R. The reading speed can also vary depending on the type of format.
n N 41 Hardware Guide Using your VAIO computer Using PC Cards Your computer features a PC Card slot that supports Type I or Type II PC Cards. PC Cards allow you to connect portable external devices. Inserting a PC Card You do not need to shut down your computer when inserting a PC Card. To insert a PC Card, proceed as follows: 1 Insert the PC Card into the PC Card slot with the front label and arrow facing upwards. 2 Gently push the PC Card slot into the connector.
n N 42 Hardware Guide Using your VAIO computer While the card is inserted, your computer may not enter the Hibernate power management mode. It may enter Standby mode. It is recommended that you remove the card before your computer enters Hibernate mode by pressing the + keys, and when it is set to enter Hibernate automatically while using a battery as the source of power. Removing a PC Card Follow the steps below to remove the PC Card while your computer is on.
n N 43 Hardware Guide Troubleshooting PC Card My PC Card is not working ❑ Make sure the PC Card is compatible with your version of Windows. ❑ Use the Sony Notebook Setup utility to disable devices you are not currently using.
n N 44 Hardware Guide Using your VAIO computer Using the Memory Stick Your VAIO computer is designed to support the Memory Stick. The Memory Stick is a compact, portable, and versatile device especially designed for exchanging and sharing digital data with compatible products, such as digital cameras, mobile phones and CLIÉ handheld devices. Because it is removable, it can be used for external data storage.
n N 45 Hardware Guide Using your VAIO computer Write-protecting a Memory Stick Some Memory Sticks are designed with an erasure prevention switch to protect valuable data from accidental erasure or overwriting. Move the tab horizontally or vertically to set or release write-protection*. When the erasure prevention switch is off, data can be saved on the Memory Stick. When the erasure prevention switch is on, data can be read from but not saved on the Memory Stick.
n N 46 Hardware Guide Using your VAIO computer Inserting a Memory Stick To insert a Memory Stick, proceed as follows: 1 Once you have stored your data from your digital device, insert the Memory Stick with the arrow facing up and toward the Memory Stick slot. 2 Carefully slide the Memory Stick into the slot until it clicks in place. The Memory Stick is automatically detected by your system and appears in your My Computer window as a local drive.
n N 47 Hardware Guide Using your VAIO computer Using the modem Your computer is equipped with an internal modem. You need to connect to a phone line to take advantage of online services and the internet, as well as to register your computer and software online, and to contact VAIO-Link by e-mail. Use the single RJ-11 jack to connect the supplied modem cable to the phone line.
n N 48 Hardware Guide Using your VAIO computer Using the Bluetooth functionality If your notebook is equipped with the Bluetooth functionality*, you can establish wireless communication between your notebook and other Bluetooth devices such as another notebook, a mobile phone or a modem station. You can transfer data between these devices without cables and up to 10 metres range in open space.
n N 49 Hardware Guide Using your VAIO computer Communicating with another Bluetooth device You can transfer data to and from other Bluetooth devices such as another notebook, a mobile phone or a modem station without using cables. To communicate with another Bluetooth device, proceed as follows: 1 Turn on the Wireless switch. 2 Choose Start > Control Panel > Network and Internet Connections > Bluetooth Devices. The Bluetooth Device dialog appears. 3 Click Add. The Add Bluetooth Device Wizard appears.
n N 50 Hardware Guide 6 Choose one of the following options: ❑ If you want Windows to provide you with a password, select Choose a Passkey for me. ❑ If the documentation of the other Bluetooth device contains a password, click Use the passkey found in the documentation and enter the passkey. ❑ If you want to create your own password, click Let me use my own passkey and enter a passkey. ❑ If your device does not use a password, click Don’t use a passkey. 7 Click Next to continue.
n N 51 Hardware Guide Using your VAIO computer Communicating with another Bluetooth device using Bluetooth File Transfer Wizard You can easily transfer data, such as files or pictures, to another Bluetooth device. To transfer data from or to another Bluetooth device, proceed as follows: 1 Choose Start > All Programs > Accessories > Communications > Bluetooth File Transfer Wizard. The Bluetooth File Transfer Wizard appears. 2 Click Next to continue.
n N 52 Hardware Guide Using your VAIO computer I cannot find the Bluetooth device with which I want to communicate ❑ If the connected device is also connected to other devices, it may not appear on the Devices tab in the in your Remote Bluetooth Device Panel dialog or you may not be able to communicate with the device. ❑ Check that the Bluetooth function of the device with which you want to communicate is on. See the other device’s manual for more details.
n N 53 Hardware Guide Using your VAIO computer Using Wireless LAN (WLAN) Thanks to Sony’s Wireless LAN (WLAN)*, all your digital devices with built-in WLAN functionality communicate freely with each other through a powerful network. A WLAN is a network in which a mobile user can connect to a local area network (LAN) through a wireless (radio) connection. So there is no need anymore to pull cables or wires through walls and ceilings.
n N 54 Hardware Guide Using your VAIO computer Communicating without an Access Point (computer-to-computer) A computer-to-computer network is a network in which a local network is created only by the wireless devices themselves, with no other central controller or Access Point. Each device communicates directly with other devices in the network. You can set up a computer-to-computer network easily at home.
n N 55 Hardware Guide Using your VAIO computer 12 Fill in exactly the same Network key again, for confirmation. 13 Select the This is a computer (ad hoc) network; wireless access points are not used check box at the bottom of the screen. 14 Click OK. Your Network name appears in the Preferred networks list. 15 Click OK. The network you have created appears in the list. Your computer is ready to communicate with another computer.
n N 56 Hardware Guide Using your VAIO computer Communicating with an Access Point (infrastructure) An infrastructure network is a network that extends an existing wired local network to wireless devices by providing an Access Point, for example the Sony PCWA-A320 Access Point. The Access Point bridges the wireless and wired LAN and acts as a central controller for the Wireless LAN. The Access Point coordinates transmission and reception from multiple wireless devices within a specific range.
n N 57 Hardware Guide Using your VAIO computer How to select a Wireless LAN channel In an 802.11b/g configuration, channels 1 to 13 can be used. (a) With an Access Point ("Infrastructure") ❑ The channel used will be the channel selected by the Access Point. ✍ For details on how to select the channel that will be used by the Access Point, please refer to the corresponding instruction manual.
n N 58 Hardware Guide Using your VAIO computer Troubleshooting Wireless LAN if you cannot use the Wireless LAN function, make sure the wireless switch is turned on before checking the following points. The Wireless LAN Access Point and my computer cannot communicate ❑ Check if the power of the Access Point is turned on. ❑ Check if the Access Point is displayed in the View Available Networks list. (Right-click the network icon in the taskbar displaying Wireless Network Connection.
n N 59 Hardware Guide Using your VAIO computer I cannot access the internet ❑ Check the settings of the Access Point. See the manual of the Access Point. ❑ Check if your computer and the Access Point are communicating. If they are communicating, you see the word Connected appear behind the name of the network.
n N 60 Hardware Guide Using your VAIO computer Using power saving modes When you use a battery as the source of power for your computer, you can take advantage of power management settings to conserve battery life. In addition to the normal operating mode, which allows you to turn off specific devices, your computer has two distinct power saving modes: Standby and Hibernate.
n N 61 Hardware Guide ✍ Using your VAIO computer If you press the power button for more than 4 seconds, the computer will switch off automatically. You will lose any unsaved data. When the computer is in Standby mode, you cannot insert a disc. The computer comes out of Standby mode quicker than out of Hibernate mode. Standby uses more power than Hibernate. If the battery runs down when your computer enters Standby mode, you will lose any unsaved data. Going back to the previous work state is impossible.
n N 62 Hardware Guide ✍ Using your VAIO computer If you press the power button for more than 4 seconds, the computer will switch off automatically. If you do not use the AC adapter for a long period of time, put your computer into Hibernate mode. This power saving mode saves you the time of shutting down in the normal way. When the computer is in Hibernate mode, you cannot insert a disc. Hibernate mode requires more time than Standby mode to be activated.
n N 63 Hardware Guide Using your VAIO computer Troubleshooting power management The power management setting is not responding Your computer’s operating system may become unstable if a lower power state, such as Hibernate is initiated, and then changed before the computer completely enters the lower power state. To restore the computer to its normal operating stability, proceed as follows: 1 Close all open applications.
n N 64 Hardware Guide Using your VAIO computer To activate anagement, proceed as follows: 1 Right-click the power status icon in the taskbar. 2 Select Adjust Power Properties. The Power Options Properties screen appears. 3 Select the VAIO Power Management tab. Activating VAIO Power Management power schemes VAIO Power Management provides several predefined power schemes.
n N 65 Hardware Guide Using your VAIO computer To activate a VAIO Power Management power scheme, proceed as follows: 1 Open Adjust Power Properties. 2 Select the Power Schemes tab. 3 Select a power scheme in the Power schemes drop-down list. 4 If you now select the VAIO Power Management tab, you see that the selected power scheme appears to the right of Power Scheme. 5 If necessary, you can change the items in the list, example, the brightness of the LCD. 6 Click OK.
n N 66 Hardware Guide Using your VAIO computer Restoring the default settings The power scheme settings that you changed on the VAIO Power Management tab can be restored to the default settings. To restore the default settings, proceed as follows: 1 Select the VAIO Power Management tab in the Power Options Properties window. 2 Click Advanced. The VAIO Power Management window appears. 3 Click the Reset by default button. The Confirm window appears.
n N 67 Hardware Guide Using your VAIO computer To change the power scheme, proceed as follows: Select the desired power scheme from the drop-down list on VAIO Power Management Viewer. To view performance with the power scheme modified with VAIO Power Management, proceed as follows: When both VAIO Power Management and VAIO Power Management Viewer are running, VAIO Power Management Viewer shows performance with the power scheme that was modified with VAIO Power Management.
n N 68 Hardware Guide Connecting peripheral devices Connecting peripheral devices You can add functionality to your computer by using the various ports on your unit.
n N 69 Hardware Guide Connecting peripheral devices Connecting a docking station Your computer supports the use of a docking station. Attaching a docking station enables you to connect additional peripherals to your computer, such as a printer or an external display. If your model is delivered with a docking station, it features a TV tuner board. In combination with Sony's VAIO Zone software, you can watch and record television programs directly on your notebook.
