Basic Operations Playing a CD 4 2 1,3 For hookup instructions, see pages 31 - 34. 1 Z CD OPEN/CLOSE Press Z CD OPEN/CLOSE (direct power-on) and place the CD on the CD tray. Be sure to align the center of the CD with the center of the CD tray. Note Place one CD each only on the CD tray. If you place one CD over another and close the CD tray, you will not be able to pull out the tray.

You can store the stations you want separately in “FM1” and “FM2”. • If the FM broadcast is noisy, press MODE until “MONO” appears in the display and the radio will play in monaural. • Next time you want to listen to the radio, just press RADIO BAND• AUTO PRESET. The player turns on automatically and starts playing the previous station.

The CD Player Using the display You can check information about the CD using the display. DISPLAY Tip When two or three CDs are placed, select the CD you want to check information about by pressing DISC CHANGE (DISC 1, DISC 2 or DISC 3 on remote). Checking the total track number and playing time of the current CD Press DISPLAY in stop mode. Locating a specific track CD OPEN/ POWER CLOSE SLEEP DISC 1 You can quickly locate any track using the number buttons on the remote. Playing tracks repeatedly DISC CHANGE (Repeat Play) MULTI JOG You can play tracks repeatedly in normal, shuffle or program play modes (see pages 17 – 18.). Playing tracks in random order (Shuffle Play) DISC CHANGE You can play tracks in random order. Creating your own program (Program Play) DISC CHANGE MODE ENTER MEM MULTI JOG The CD Player You can make a program of up to 20 tracks from all the CDs in the order you want them to be played. CD u On the remote 1 Press MODE until “ALL DISCS PGM” appears in the display. 2 Press DISC 1, DISC 2 or DISC 3 to select the CD. 3 Press the number buttons for the tracks you want to program in the order you want. To program additional tracks from another CD, repeat steps 2 and 3. 4 Press N on the CD section.
Creating your own program (Program Play) (continued) Tips • You can play the same program again, since the program is saved until you open the CD tray. • You can record your own program. 1 After you’ve created the program, insert a blank tape into deck B. 2 Press DUBBING to start recording. 18 The CD Player To cancel Program Play Press MODE until “PGM” disappears from the display. The Radio Presetting radio stations RADIO BAND AUTO PRESET TUNE – + TUNE ENTER MEM MULTI JOG Tip If you automatically preset the “FM1” or “FM2” band, 10 radio stations are stored in “FM1” band and 10 more radio stations are stored in “FM2” band. 1 Press RADIO BAND•AUTO PRESET to select the band. 2 Hold down RADIO BAND•AUTO PRESET for 2 seconds until “AUTO” flashes in the display. 3 Press ENTER MEM. The Radio You can store radio stations into the player's memory.
Playing preset radio stations Once you've preset the stations, use MULTI JOG on the player or the number buttons on the remote to tune in to your favorite stations. The Audio Emphasis Selecting the audio emphasis (SOUND/MEGA BASS) SOUND You can adjust the audio emphasis of the sound you are listening to. SURROUND MEGA BASS Press SOUND to select the audio emphasis you want. Each time the button is pressed, the display changes.
Selecting the audio emphasis (SOUND/MEGA BASS) (continued) Reinforcing the bass sound Press MEGA BASS. ”MEGA BASS” appears in the display. To return to normal sound, press the button again. Getting the surround effect Press SURROUND. “SUR” appears in the display. You can get the surround effect without connecting surround speakers. To return to normal sound, press the button again.
Displaying the spectrum analyzer CD OPEN/ POWER CLOSE SLEEP DISC 1 You can display 3 different patterns of the audio signal you are listening to by using the remote. The Timer Setting the clock “- -:- -” indication appears in the display until you set the clock. CLOCK ENTER MEM MULTI JOG Tip The time display system: 12-hour system AM12:00 = midnight PM12:00 = noon Before you begin, hook up the system (see pages 31 34). 1 Press and hold CLOCK until the hour digit flashes. 2 Set the clock. 1 Turn MULTI JOG to set the hour and press ENTER MEM. 2 Turn MULTI JOG to set the minutes. 3 Press ENTER MEM. The clock starts from 00 seconds.
Waking up to music STANDBY You can wake up to music or a radio program at a preset time. Make sure you have set the clock (“Setting the clock” on page 24). TIMER ENTER MEM MULTI JOG Before you begin, make sure the (clock) indication is not lit in the display. If it is lit, press STANDBY. 1 2 The Timer Note You cannot preset waking up timer and recording timer (page 27) at the same time. Prepare the music source you want to play. Waking up to music (continued) 4 Set the timer to the hour and the minutes you want the music to start. 1 Turn MULTI JOG to set the hour and press ENTER MEM. 2 Turn MULTI JOG to set the minutes, and press ENTER MEM. Tips • To exit the standby mode, press STANDBY to make the indication disappear. • The preset settings remain until you reset them. 5 Set the timer to the hour and the minutes you want the music to go off. (Do as step 4.) 6 Turn MULTI JOG to set the volume you want, and press ENTER MEM.
Timer-recording radio programs You can set timer to record the radio at a certain time. You can also record the sound of the component connected to the LINE IN jacks of the player. Make sure you have set the clock (see “Setting the clock” on page 24). Tip When you receive the AM program in step 1, press z/X to check if the noise is heard. If so, press MODE to select the position that most decreases the noise. TIMER ENTER MEM Before you begin, make sure the (clock) indication is not lit in the display.

To use the player before a timer-recording starts If you turn on the player, you can use it as usual. Before the preset time, tune in the station you want to record and turn off the power. To stop timer-recording Press POWER to turn off the power.
Falling asleep to music You can set the player to turn off automatically after 10, 20, 30, 60, 90, and 120 minutes, allowing you to fall asleep while listening to music. Tips • The display window does not light while the sleeping timer is on. • You can fall asleep and wake up to different music. Set the waking up timer first (see page 25), turn on the power, and then set the sleeping timer. However, you cannot store different radio stations. 1 2 3 SLEEP Play the music source you want.

Hooking up the system (continued) Note Do not connect the outdoor antenna to the AM EXT ANT terminals. 2 Hooking up the antennas 1 Strip the coating from the end of the cable and twist the wires. 2 Connect the wires to the terminals. To improve the FM reception Connect the FM outdoor antenna (not supplied). If you use a distributor, you can also use the TV antenna. FM outdoor antenna (not supplied) FM EXT ANT 75Ω Earth To improve the AM reception Setting Up A NT AM E XT Connect a 6- to 15-meter (20- to 50 feet) insulated wire (not supplied) to the AM antenna terminal. Keep the wire as horizontal as possible near the window or outdoor. You do not need to disconnect the supplied AM loop antenna.
Hooking up the system (continued) 3 Connecting the AC power cord Insert the AC power cord to the wall outlet. About the demonstration mode The player enters the demonstration mode about 10 seconds after you connected the AC power cord to the wall outlet. Demonstration indications such as “DEMO MODE” and “PHC-Z10” appear in the display one after another. The player also enters the demonstration mode if you do not operate the player for about one minute after you turned it on.
Saving power Even when power is turned off, this player consumes about 7.5 W for time indication, timer operation, remote control reception. If you use the saving power function, you can reduce power consumption to less than 1 W. DISPLAY The player enters the lower power consumption standby mode. Setting Up When the power is off, press and hold DISPLAY for about 2 seconds. To cancel the saving power To make the time indication appear, press and hold DISPLAY for about 2 seconds when the power is off.
Connecting optional components You can enjoy the sound from a VCR, TV or MiniDisc player/recorder through the speakers of this player. Be sure to turn off the power of each component before making connections. For details, refer to the instruction manual of the component to be connected. Additional Information Precautions On safety • As the laser beam used in the CD player section is harmful to the eyes, do not attempt to disassemble the casing. Refer servicing to qualified personnel only. • Should any solid object or liquid fall into the player, unplug the player, and have it checked by qualified personnel before operating it any further.
Precautions (continued) On operation • If the player is brought directly from a cold to a warm location, or is placed in a very damp room, moisture may condense on the lens inside the CD player section. Should this occur, the player will not operate properly. In this case, remove the CD and wait about an hour for the moisture to evaporate. • If the player has not been used for a long time, set it in the playback mode to warm it up for a few minutes before inserting a cassette.
Troubleshooting Symptom Remedy There is no audio. • Press POWER to turn on the player. • Connect the AC power cord to a wall outlet securely. General • Make sure the function you want to use appears in the display window. • Adjust the volume. • Unplug the headphones when listening through speakers. “SP CHECK” appears in the display. • The speaker cords are short-circuited. Twist the wires and connect them to the terminals. Noise is heard.

Maintenance Cleaning the tape heads and tape path Wipe the heads, the pinch rollers and the capstans with a cleaning swab slightly moistened with cleaning fluid or alcohol after every 10 hours of operation for optimum playback and recording quality. To make the best possible recording, however, we recommend that you clean all surfaces over which tape travels before each recording.
