Getting Started Getting Started Features This Video Recorder contains a TV tuner and can record a TV program on “Memory Stick” media. 1 Insert a “Memory Stick” media into your CLIÉ handheld. 2 Set the timer REC preset* on your CLIÉ handheld. Video Recorder CLIÉ handheld “Memory Stick” media 3 Insert a “Memory Stick” media into the Video Recorder. The timer REC preset on your CLIÉ handheld is automatically set on the Video Recorder. 4 Record a TV program.
Notes • You have to install Video Utility on your CLIÉ handheld from the supplied Installation CD-ROM to set a timer REC preset. • You cannot use this Video Recorder to play back recordings made on “Memory Stick” media. • When you insert or remove a “Memory Stick” media or press any button on the Video Recorder, hold the Video Recorder with your hand to keep it steady. z Hints • The Video Recorder has LINE IN jacks, for recording pictures from other equipment.

The “Memory Stick” media status symbols and meanings are as follows: : The “Memory Stick” media is not formatted properly for use with this Video Recorder. : “Memory Stick” media is not inserted.
Basic Hookups and Settings Quick Overview This quick overview will give you enough information to start using the Video Recorder.
Step 1: Connecting the Antenna Cable Select one of the following antenna hookups to record a TV program: Hookup 1 For antenna only (page 14) Hookup 2 Hookup 3 For a cable box (page 15) Note to CATV system installer: This reminder is provided to call the CATV system installer’s attention to Article 820-40 of the NEC that provides guidelines for proper grounding and, in particular, specifies that the cable ground shall be connected to the grounding system of the building, as close to the point of cable entry
Hookup 1: Connecting the antenna only Use this hookup to connect a VHF/UHF antenna (or separate VHF and UHF antennas) to the video recorder. Use an antenna cable to connect the signal source coming from your wall to the VHF/UHF IN jack on the Video Recorder. Video Recorder Antenna cable (supplied) Wall To VHF/UHF IN Signal source Notes • If your antenna is a flat cable (300-ohm twin lead cable), use an external antenna connector (not supplied) to connect the antenna to the Video Recorder.
3 Use the supplied antenna cable to connect the splitter’s other output jack to the VHF/UHF IN jack on the Video Recorder. 3 Use an antenna cable (not supplied) to connect the splitter’s other output jack to the RF IN on your cable box. 4 Use the supplied antenna cable to connect the RF OUT on your cable box to the VHF/UHF IN jack on the Video Recorder.
Step 2: Connecting to Other Equipment with the Audio/Video Cable If you want to input or output signals to other equipment (e.g., a TV, VCR, or satellite receiver) using the audio/video cable (supplied), refer to the following connections. Basic Hookups and Settings Note When connecting a cable, make sure to match the color-coded pins to the appropriate jacks on the equipment.
Connecting a VCR or satellite receiver (Input a signal from other equipment) When you connect to other equipment, you can do the following: • Record a signal from other equipment (VCR or satellite receiver, etc.) Connect the Video Recorder to the other equipment with the audio/video cable (supplied). When you want to input a signal from the other equipment, connect LINE IN on the Video Recorder to OUTPUT on the other equipment. Video Recorder To LINE IN VCR or satellite receiver, etc.
1 Connect the AC power adapter to the DC IN connector of the Video Recorder. 2 Connect the AC cord to the AC power adapter (1), then plug the AC cord into a wall outlet (2). Notes • For details on setting the clock, refer to “Step 5: Setting the Clock” on page 20. When installing the Video Recorder vertically You can install the Video Recorder vertically when you attach the supplied stand to either side of the Video Recorder.
Step 4: Turning the Video Recorder on and off Press 1 (power) on the Video Recorder. The Video Recorder turns on, and the POWER indicator blinks momentarily and then stays lit in green. The Video Recorder cannot be operated while the POWER indicator is blinking. Turning off the Video Recorder Press 1 (power) on the Video Recorder. Step 5: Setting the Clock Follow this procedure to set the clock. 1 Press 1 (power) on the Video Recorder.
7 Press CHANNEL+/– to select the minute, then press SET. The minute is set. The clock starts and the time is displayed. Step 6: Performing the Setup Using Your CLIÉ Handheld TM Installing the software on your CLIÉ handheld Follow the procedure below to install Video Utility on your CLIÉ handheld from the supplied Installation CD-ROM. Note Before installing, it is necessary to connect your CLIÉ handheld to your computer using a cradle or a USB HotSync cable to perform the HotSync operation.
Note If you want to use more than one CLIÉ handheld, you need to install this utility on each CLIÉ handheld. 4 Click [DONE]. Click [OK] when the Confirmation dialog box is displayed. The Install CD-ROM window is displayed. 5 Click [Exit] on the Install CD-ROM window. The Install CD-ROM window closes. In the next step, you will perform the HotSync operation to carry out the installation to your CLIÉ handheld. 6 Execute a HotSync operation on your CLIÉ handheld.
2 Tap (Video Util) on the CLIE Launcher. The welcome message on the Video Utility screen is displayed. (Video Util) for the first time, a welcome message appears on When you tap the screen. From the next time, whenever you need to make tuner and channel settings, tap at the bottom of the Video Utility screen and display the Video Utility screen for [Setup]. 3 Tap [Next]. The Video Utility screen for [Setup] is displayed. 4 Select [Cable] or [Air] (broadcast signal) in the list box next to [Antenna].
5 Tap [Channels]. The Available channels screen is displayed. 6 Tap a channel you want to receive by changing the Available channels screen. to in When you change to here, the channels you select are displayed in [Channel] in the Video Utility screen for [New Preset] and also in the front panel display of the Video Recorder. Note Unselected channels will not appear in the front panel display of the Video Recorder, nor as channel options in the Video Utility screen.
9 Remove the “Memory Stick” media from your CLIÉ handheld. Note Do not remove the “Memory Stick” media from your CLIÉ handheld while the “Memory Stick” LED is lit. 10 Press 1 (power) on the Video Recorder. 11 Insert the “Memory Stick” media into the “Memory Stick” slot of the Video Recorder. When you insert the “Memory Stick” media containing the tuner and channel settings, the Video Recorder automatically reads them and adjusts the appropriate settings.
Operations Setting a Timer REC Preset You can set, edit, or delete a timer REC preset using Video Utility. You can also set the same timer REC preset on other “Memory Stick” media. Note The Video Recorder performs timer recordings using timer REC preset settings specified on a “Memory Stick” media. To record, insert the “Memory Stick” media containing the timer REC preset information into the Video Recorder.
1 Tap here to display a drop-down menu. Select “REC Time”, “Title”, or “REC Mode” (recording mode and sound). 2 Displays the timer REC presets in the backup list of your CLIÉ handheld. 3 When you tap [Add preset], you can add a timer REC preset from the backup list of your CLIÉ handheld to the “Memory Stick” media. 4 Displays the timer REC preset on the “Memory Stick” media. 5 When you tap , the Video Utility screen for [Setup] is displayed. Use this screen to make the antenna settings.
Setting a timer REC preset Follow the procedure below to set a new timer REC preset using Video Utility. 1 Insert a “Memory Stick” media into your CLIÉ handheld. 2 Tap (Video Util) on the CLIE Launcher. The Video Utility screen is displayed. 3 Tap [New]. The Video Utility screen for [New Preset] is displayed. 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 4 Tap next to 1 [Date]. The Date screen is displayed.
5 Tap the date you want to record. The date you select is displayed next to [Date] in the Video Utility screen for [New Preset]. 6 Tap next to 2 [Time]. The Time screen is displayed. Operations 7 Tap v or V to set the hour and minute of [Start] and [End], then tap [OK]. The recording time you select is displayed next to [Time] in the Video Utility screen for [New Preset]. The maximum recording time for one timer REC preset is two hours. 8 Tap next to 3 [Channel] and select a channel from the list.
9 Tap next to 4 [Repeat] and select an option from the list. The repeat option you select is displayed next to [Repeat] in the Video Utility screen for [New Preset]. When you select (over write), the same program will always be over written so that only the latest recording remains on the “Memory Stick” media. 10 Tap next to 5 [REC Mode] and select an option from the list. The picture quality option you select is displayed next to [REC Mode] in the Video Utility screen for [New Preset].

z Hints • To set other timer REC presets, tap [New] and follow steps 3 to step 13. • You can have up to 100 presets in the backup list of your CLIÉ handheld, and up to 20 on a “Memory Stick” media. • Timer REC presets in the backup list of your CLIÉ handheld and the list on an inserted “Memory Stick” media are deleted automatically when the preset time is past. Notes • When consecutive timer REC presets are set, the last 1 minute of the earlier preset cannot be recorded.
Notes • The Video Recorder cannot record a timer REC preset if the Video Recorder is already turned on (the POWER indicator lit) at the scheduled preset time. When you insert a “Memory Stick” media containing a timer REC preset, you must turn off the Video Recorder to enter standby mode.
Setting a timer REC preset before inserting a “Memory Stick” media into your CLIÉ handheld You can set a timer REC preset using Video Utility and store it on your CLIÉ handheld first, then add the preset to a “Memory Stick” media later. Follow the procedure below to set a timer REC preset using this method. 1 Follow steps 2 to 12 of “Setting a timer REC preset” on page 28. 2 Tap [OK]. The timer REC preset you set is displayed in the Handheld frame (top).
Editing/deleting a timer REC preset Follow the procedure below to edit or delete a timer REC preset. 1 Insert a “Memory Stick” media into your CLIÉ handheld. 2 Tap (Video Util) on the CLIE Launcher. The Video Utility screen is displayed. 3 Tap the timer REC preset you want to edit in the Memory Stick frame (bottom). The Video Utility screen for [Edit Preset] is displayed.
Note Timer REC presets in the backup list of your CLIÉ handheld (top frame) will not be deleted. z Hint You can delete the timer REC preset in the backup list of your CLIÉ handheld (top frame) with the same procedure. Checking the storage space of a “Memory Stick” media Follow the procedure below to check the storage space of a “Memory Stick” media. 1 Insert a “Memory Stick” media into your CLIÉ handheld. 2 Tap (Video Util) on the CLIE Launcher. The Video Utility screen is displayed.
Guide to Video Utility menu This section explains each menu of Video Utility. For details on other common menus of CLIÉ applications, refer to the “Handbook” of CLIÉ handheld. Preset Deleting All (Handheld) Deletes all timer REC presets on your CLIÉ handheld. Delete All (MS) Deletes all timer REC presets on the “Memory Stick” media. Copy... You can copy all timer REC presets and setting information on the “Memory Stick” media to another “Memory Stick” media. Follow the procedure below to copy.
Options 38 Setup Changes the settings for [Antenna] and [Channels]. Error Log Displays error information of “Memory Stick” media. About Video Utility Displays the software version of Video Utility.
Recording TV Programs Manually Follow the procedure below to record a TV program without setting the timer REC preset. 1 Press 1 (power) on the Video Recorder. The POWER indicator blinks momentarily and then stays lit in green. 2 Insert a “Memory Stick” media into the “Memory Stick” slot of the Video Recorder and press CHANNEL+/– to select the channel or input source you want to record.
To cancel recording Press x STOP. The REC indicator blinks momentarily and then turns off when recording is finished. Note When you press x STOP, recording continues on the “Memory Stick” media for approximately one minute and the “Memory Stick” indicator remains lit. Do not remove the “Memory Stick” media while the “Memory Stick” media indicator is lit. It is possible that all data on the “Memory Stick” media may be erased or a malfunction may occur.
Playing Back Recordings You can play a TV program recorded by this Video Recorder using Movie Player on your CLIÉ handheld. Follow the procedure below to operate. For details on Movie Player, refer to “Movie Player” in the “CLIÉ Application Manual” installed on your computer.
3 Tap (Movie Player) on the CLIE Launcher. The Movie Player screen is displayed. 1 2 4 Tap 1,the Movie file format button, and select the file format that you want to display on the screen. Tap 2,the movie file that you want to play from the list. The playback screen appears and playback starts. Deleting a TV program or image Tap in the Movie Player screen. Tap a title you want to delete by changing to and tap [Delete].
Additional Information Troubleshooting Read this Troubleshooting section before calling Sony Customer Information Services Center. If the problem persists even after reading this section, check our official Sony CLIÉ website (URL on back page). Power The power does not turn on. c Check that the AC power adapter is connected securely. Recording/Presetting c You can have up to 100 presets on your CLIÉ handheld and up to 20 on a “Memory Stick” media.
The timer REC preset is not complete. c Check that the AC power adapter is connected securely. c Check that the Video Recorder is in standby mode. The confirmation message “The new timer REC preset starts at the end of another preset in the Memory Stick. Do you want to update the recording of the earlier preset to stop recording 1 minute earlier?” is displayed.
You cannot copy the data of “Memory Stick” media. c A “Memory Stick” media is not inserted in your CLIÉ handheld, or there is no preset information on the “Memory Stick” media in your CLIÉ handheld. If you attempt to copy, all initial settings and timer REC presets in the Memory Stick frame (bottom) will be over written on the new “Memory Stick” media. Playback The sound that is recorded with stereo or SAP (Second Audio Program) cannot be heard.
Self-diagnosis Function (When letters/numbers appear in the display) When the self-diagnosis function is activated to prevent the recorder from malfunctioning, a combination of a letter and two numbers, or the “Memory Stick” media status symbol appears in the front panel display. In this case, refer to the following table. If an error number other than in the following list appears, contact Sony Customer Information Services Center.
“Memory Stick” media status symbol Remedy An unusable “Memory Stick” media is inserted. c The “Memory Stick” is not formatted properly for use with this Video Recorder. Change to another “Memory Stick” media. No “Memory Stick” media is inserted. c Insert a “Memory Stick” media.
