– Introduction – The network function on the camcorder The camcorder can access the Internet through your provider using a dial-up networking connection with a Bluetooth device. You can view a Web page, and send and receive e-mail with the images recorded with your camcorder attached. Bluetooth specification ver. 1.1 has been adopted for the communication system of the camcorder, and compatible Bluetooth profiles are the “Generic Access Profile” and the “Dial-up Networking Profiles”.
Overview of the Bluetooth wireless technology What is the Bluetooth wireless technology? Introduction The Bluetooth wireless technology allows communication between various Bluetooth devices without using cables. Devices which can use this technology include PCs, computer peripheral devices, PDAs, and mobile phones. This omnidirectional communication system enables communication even if the Bluetooth device is in a bag or there are obstacles between the devices.
Basic operations in the NETWORK mode This section describes basic control ways to operate the camcorder, those which are used for network operations. How to use the Network Menu To access the Network Menu, refer to “Accessing the network” in the operating instructions supplied with your camcorder. [a] [b] [c] [d] [a]: Send and receive e-mail. Basic operations in the NETWORK mode How to use the control button Most of the network operations are carried out by the control button. Select a button on the screen using the control button, then enter it by pressing the control button. (1) Press v/V/b/B on the control button repeatedly to select the desired button displayed on the screen. The selected button turns orange. Introduction Note The shape of the control button differs depending on your camcorder model.
Basic operations in the NETWORK mode How to input characters You have to frequently enter characters, such as e-mail addresses, or Web page addresses (URL), to use the network function. This section describes how to input characters. 1 Selecting the character type (1) Display the character input screen. (2) Select either of the character type tabs. abc: When inputting alphabetical characters. 123: When inputting numerical characters.

When inputting the same character or the other characters on the same key, select another key using v/V/b/B on the control button, then select the previous key again. (Bookmark) Bookmark the current page. (Bookmarks are stored in the camcorder.
– Preparation – Registering a Bluetooth device This section describes making a registration of a Bluetooth device. Here we describe the procedure for registering the Sony Modem Adaptor with Bluetooth Function. Once the registration is completed, the camcorder can connect to the Bluetooth device without reregistering the device. Up to three Bluetooth devices can be registered. Also, refer to the operating instructions supplied with the Bluetooth device.
Registering a Bluetooth device 2 Specifying the Modem Adaptor with Bluetooth Function as the connection device (1) Open the Network Menu. For details on how to open the Network Menu, refer to “Accessing the network” in the operating instructions supplied with your camcorder. (2) Select [ Setup], then press the centre z on the control button. The Setup screen appears. , (3) Select [Bluetooth Setup], then press the centre z on the control button. The Bluetooth Setup screen appears.
Registering a Bluetooth device (4) Select [Select], then press the centre z on the control button. The Bluetooth devices list appears. When making a registration for the first time, only [ Return] and [ New] are indicated. The list shows up to three Bluetooth devices. When selecting a Bluetooth device on the list, see “Selecting other Bluetooth devices from the list” on page 20. Preparation , Tip The last-used Bluetooth device is listed next to [ New].
Registering a Bluetooth device (7) Enter the passkey. For details on how to input characters, see “How to input characters” on page 8. For example, when using the BTA-NW1 Modem Adaptor with Bluetooth Function, the passkey is its serial number which is indicated on the label on the rear panel. ® MODEL NO.
Registering a Bluetooth device When the registration has failed Carry out the procedure described in “When using the Modem Adaptor with Bluetooth Function ” on page 15 again from step 4. You can display your camcorder information. (1) Open the Network Menu. For details on how to open the Network Menu, refer to “Accessing the network” in the operating instructions supplied with your camcorder.
Registering a Bluetooth device (4) Select [Info.], then press the centre z on the control button. The Bluetooth Setup: Self information screen appears. The model name This is the unique address assigned to each camcorder at the factory. This address is used when exchanging information between devices. This address cannot be modified. (The number indicated on the illustration is an example number.) To clear the Self Information screen Select [Return], then press the centre z on the control button.

Preparation , (3) Select [Bluetooth Setup], then press the centre z on the control button. The Bluetooth Setup screen appears. , (4) Select [Select], then press the centre z on the control button. The Bluetooth devices list appears. , (5) Select the device you want to delete, then press the centre z on the control button.
Setting network preferences You have to access the Internet to view a Web page, or send or receive your e-mail. This section describes how to set network preferences to access the Internet. Setting your provider preferences Set your provider preferences according to the requirements of your provider. When you do not understand the setup items, consult your provider. (1) Open the Network Menu.
Setting network preferences (4) Set up the following items: ID: Enter the login name you use for accessing your provider using a dial-up connection. Preparation Tip on “ID” This “ID” is also referred to as a “user ID”, “login name”, “PPP login name”, “network ID”, “account name”, “logon name”, “user name”, etc. Password: Enter the password you use for accessing your provider using a dial-up connection.
Setting network preferences (5) Select the Mail tab. The Mail screen appears. (6) Set up the following items: User ID: Enter the user ID name you use for your provider. Password: Enter the password of your user ID for accessing the POP server. Your user ID and password are required to use e-mail. Tip on “Password” This “Password” is also referred to as a “mail password”, “mail server password”, etc. Address: Enter your e-mail address.
Setting network preferences (7) Select the Browser tab. The Browser screen appears. Preparation (8) Set up the following items: Proxy: Enter the proxy server address of your provider. Port: Enter the port number of the proxy server of your provider. This entry may be unnecessary, depending on your provider. For details, consult your provider. (9) Select [Exit], then press the centre z on the control button. The setup is completed, and the Network Setup screen appears again.
Setting network preferences Setting network options preferences For the network options setup, you can use the network function even if the network options setup is left at the default settings. If you have set your preferences based on the requirements of your provider, you can access the Internet without modifying the items on the Network Options screen. (1) Display the Setup screen. (2) Select [Network Options], then press the centre z on the control button. The Network Options screen appears.
Setting network preferences Note Although you have selected a specific time for the “Time Out” function, the line connection may not be cancelled automatically, depends on the Web page you access. In this case, you can cancel the line connection manually. Preparation Mail Send&Receive: Select whether to check the e-mail inbox after sending email. Save Mail to Server: Select whether to keep copies of the messages on the server.
Setting network preferences Note on “Save Mail to Server” When “Save Mail to Server” is not checked, copies of e-mail messages received will not be stored on your server. However, the following error messages described below depend on the type of e-mail messages. See the table below. Messages1) Cause and/or Corrective Actions Memory Stick Memory Full You tried to download e-mail when the “Memory Stick” is already full.
— Network Operation— Using e-mail This section describes the basic usage of e-mail. E-mail is sent and received via the Internet. E-mail is very convenient; you can send e-mail anytime, and you can also send images stored in a “Memory Stick” by attaching them to e-mail. Sending e-mail 1 Specifying the destination address Be careful to enter the address correctly. Tip You can select the e-mail address from the address book.
Using e-mail (3) Select [To], then press the centre z on the control button. The address list appears. The list shows the addresses that are registered in the address book. For details on the address book, see “Using the address book” on page 40. , When you have selected an address listed in the address book, go to step 7. Tips •The last-used address is listed next to New. •Addresses are listed in historical order. (4) Select [ New], then press the centre z on the control button.
Using e-mail Tip If you notice that the e-mail address is wrong, you can correct it in the address book. For details on the address book, see “Editing the address book” on page 43. , Network Operation (7) If you want to send the e-mail message to other addressees, select other e-mail addresses. The check box of the selected e-mail address is indicated by the checkmark ( ). (8) Select [ Return], then press the centre z on the control button. The Send screen appears again.
Using e-mail 2 Entering the subject of a message (1) Select [Subject], then press the centre z on the control button. The subject list appears. The list shows up to six subjects. , When you want to use a subject shown on the list, select the subject, then press the centre z on the control button. After selecting the subject, go to “3 Entering the text of a message” on page 33. Tip The last-used address is listed next to [ New]. (2) Select [ New], then press the centre z on the control button.
Using e-mail 3 Entering the text of a message Enter the text of the message. You can select the text from the message list, or modify it to suit your purposes. The list shows up to six messages. (1) Select [Message], then press the centre z on the control button. The message list appears. Network Operation , The list shows messages that were made previously. When you choose to use the selected text, select [OK], then press the centre z on the control button.
Using e-mail (4) Select [Enter], then press the centre z on the control button. The Send screen appears again. , 4 Sending e-mail Tip You can send an e-mail message with your signature. For details, see “Attaching your signature to a message” on page 38. (1) Select whether you attach images or not. When attaching images, see “Attaching images to e-mail” on page 37. (2) Check the message. When you check or modify a message, see “Checking or modifying a message” on page 35.
Using e-mail (5) Select [Connect], then press the centre z on the control button. The camcorder starts dialling the selected telephone number. After the sending is completed, the message “Sending Mail Complete” appears. The phone line is automatically disconnected. (6) Select [OK], then press the centre z on the control button. The Send screen appears again. Network Operation , To cancel sending e-mail During sending, select [Cancel], then press the centre z on the control button.
Using e-mail (3) Select the message you want to check or modify, then press the centre z on the control button. The following screen appears. , (4) Check or modify the message. When the message is long, select the message area, then press the control button V repeatedly to scroll the message. When you only check the message: After checking the message, select [OK], then press the centre z on the control button. The Send screen appears again. When you modify the message: Go to step 5.
Using e-mail Attaching images to e-mail You can send images by attaching them to e-mail messages. Preparation Store the desired images in the “Memory Stick” and insert it into the camcorder. Network Operation (1) Follow these procedures: “1 Specifying the destination address” on page 29, “2 Entering the subject of a message” on page 32, and “3 Entering the text of a message” on page 33. The Send screen appears. (2) Select [Attach], then press the centre z on the control button.
Using e-mail (4) Repeat step 3 to select other images. Note The total number of images you can attach is 99, and the attachable file size is up to 3 MB. (5) Select [ OK], then press the centre z on the control button. The Send screen appears again. The total number of selected images and total file size are indicated. , To cancel the selected image Select the image again, then press the centre z on the control button. The checkmark will disappear from the image.

The setup of your signature is completed, and the Network Options screen appears again. “Yes” is indicated next to [Signature]. , (7) Select [Exit], then press the centre z on the control button. Tips •The addresses are listed in alphabetical order. •When you reply to the address of a previously received e-mail message, the address will be automatically registered on the address book. To edit the address, see “Editing the address book” below. You can edit the names or e-mail addresses in the address book.
Using e-mail (3) Select [Name] or [Address], then press the centre z on the control button. When modifying the name, select [Name], and when modifying the address, select [Address]. The character input screen appears. , (4) Modify the name or address. For details on how to input characters, see “How to input characters” on page 8. (5) Select [Enter], then press the centre z on the control button. The Address Book: Edit screen appears again.

Network Operation (2) Select the area where the name and address are indicated, then select the destination address using the control button b/B. (3) Select [tTo], then press the centre z on the control button. The Send screen appears.
Using e-mail Receiving e-mail Once you receive e-mail, you can reply to it or forward it. Preparation •Insert a “Memory Stick” into the camcorder, for storing images. •Release the lock of the “Memory Stick”. Checking your e-mail inbox Tip You can keep copies of your messages on your server even if you download the message using the camcorder. For details, see “Setting network options preferences” on page 26. (1) Open the Network Menu.
Using e-mail (3) Select [Receive], then press the centre z on the control button. The screen for verifying the connection appears. Set the Bluetooth device to connection standby with the camcorder beforehand. For details, refer to the operating instructions supplied with the Bluetooth device. Network Operation , (4) Check the telephone number. When dialling other telephone numbers Select [TEL No.], then press the centre z on the control button. The registered telephone number list appears.
Using e-mail (6) When an e-mail message has been received, select where area that the message is displayed, then select the message using the control button b/B, then press the centre z on the control button. The message is displayed. , (7) Select [Return], then press the centre z on the control button. The Receive screen appears again. To cancel reception of e-mail While downloading, select [Cancel], then press the centre z on the control button.
Using e-mail URL included in an e-mail message When a URL (http://...) is typed in the message, select the URL, then press the centre z on the control button. The browser starts automatically and accesses the indicated Web page. Tips •You can automatically check the e-mail inbox after sending e-mail. For details, see “Setting network options preferences” on page 26. •You can skip an e-mail message if its file size is too large. For details, see “Setting network options preferences” on page 26.
Using e-mail (2) Select the area where a message is indicated, then select the message you want to reply to using the control button b/B, then press the centre z on the control button. The selected message is displayed. , (3) Select [Reply], then press the centre z on the control button. The Send screen appears. , Tip “Re:” is added to the beginning of the subject line. Using e-mail Forwarding the message to another person – Forward You can forward a downloaded message to another person. (1) Display the Receive screen. Network Operation (2) Select the area where a message is indicated, then select the message you want to forward using the control button b/B, then press the centre z on the control button. The selected message is displayed. , (3) Select [Forward], then press the centre z on the control button. The Send screen appears.
Using e-mail (5) Carry out the procedure described in “3 Entering the text of a message” on page 33 to modify the message. Tip The total number of characters you can enter in a message is 512. The characters over that number will be deleted. (6) Carry out the procedure described in “4 Sending e-mail” on page 34 from step 3. Deleting unnecessary e-mail Up to 50 received e-mail messages can be stored in a “Memory Stick”.
Using e-mail (3) Select the area where a message is indicated, then select the message you want to delete using the control button b/B, then press the centre z on the control button. The selected message is displayed. (4) Select [Delete], then press the centre z on the control button. The message “Delete This Mail?” used for verification appears. Network Operation , , (5) Select [OK], then press the centre z on the control button. The selected e-mail message is deleted.
Viewing Web pages A site that posts information on the Internet is called a “Web Page” or “Web site”. You can easily retrieve information by accessing a Web site on the Internet. Viewing Web pages 1 Entering the URL needed to access the Web page Enter the address of the Web page, and then access the Internet. Be careful to enter the address correctly. Tip on URL A Web site has a unique address on the Internet. The address is called a URL. This URL is required to access a Web site.

For details on how to input characters, see “How to input characters” on page 8. , Network Operation (5) Select [Enter], then press the centre z on the control button. The screen used for verifying the connection appears. Set the Bluetooth device to connection standby with the camcorder beforehand. Viewing Web pages Note on connection status indication The connection status is indicated on the top of the screen. This item also shows a connected time and the address of the Web page. The connecting time indication should be used as a guide. Off Line: being offline Loading: Loading a Web page On Line: being online Notes •When the address is too long to display, the whole of the address is not indicated.
Viewing Web pages (2) When the menu bar is not displayed, press BROWSER MENU on the camcorder. The menu bar appears. Network Operation (3) Select (Bookmark), then press the centre z on the control button. The bookmark list appears. , (4) Select [ Add], then press the centre z on the control button. The bookmark is added, and the display returns to the Web page. , To edit a bookmark You can edit the title of a bookmark. (1) Select (Bookmark), then press the centre z on the control button.

The title and URL are indicated. , (3) Select [Edit], then press the centre z on the control button. The character input screen appears. , (4) Edit the name. Viewing Web pages To delete bookmarks You can delete bookmarks. We recommend that you delete unnecessary bookmarks since you can only store up to 30 bookmarks. (1) Select (Bookmark), then press the centre z on the control button. The bookmark list appears. Network Operation , (2) Select the bookmark you want to delete, then press the centre z on the control button. , (3) Select [Delete], then press the centre z on the control button. The message “Delete This Bookmark?” used for verification appears.

The browser screen appears again. To delete the page memo You can delete page memos. We recommend that you delete unnecessary page memos since you can only store up to 30 page memos. Preparation •Insert a “Memory Stick” into the camcorder, for storing page memos. •Release the lock of the “Memory Stick”.

The message “Delete This Page Memo Item?” used for verification appears. , Network Operation (4) Select [OK], then press the centre z on the control button. The selected page memo is deleted and the page memo list appears again. (5) Select [ Return], then press the centre z on the control button. The browser screen appears again.
Viewing Web pages (3) Select [Open], then press the centre z on the control button. The Web page stored in page memo is displayed. To select another page memo Select [Cancel], then press the centre z on the control button in step 3. The page memo list appears. Select another page memo. Shutting down the browser To finish viewing the Web page, and disconnect the phone line (1) Press BROWSER MENU on the camcorder to display the menu bar. (2) Select END (End), then press the centre z on the control button.
– Additional Information – File storage destinations and file names Files are grouped in the following folders. You can only view these folders on a computer. The meanings of the file names are as follows. sssss stands for any number within the range from 00001 to 99999. ssss stands for any number within the range from 0001 to 9999. XXX stands for a portion of an attached file name. Folder containing still image files and MPEG MOVIE AD moving image files Folder containing the text data of e-mail etc.
Troubleshooting Trouble accessing the Internet The message “...Incomplete” or “Authentication Error...” is indicated and the camcorder cannot access the Internet. c Check your setup according to the procedure described in “Setting network preferences” on page 22. The camcorder cannot access the Internet. c Try to access it again after a while. The message “Line is Busy or Phone number may be Wrong” is indicated and the camcorder cannot access the Internet. c The phone line of your provider is busy.
Troubleshooting All of the e-mail message cannot be received. c The total number of available e-mail characters is 4000. You cannot receive the entire text of e-mail that has more than 4000 characters. The message “PPP Authentication Error” is indicated. c Check your setup according to the procedure described in “Setting network preferences” on page 22. Additional Information The camcorder cannot receive e-mail. c The clock of the camcorder is not set up. Set it up.
Troubleshooting The Web page is not loaded. c When entering its URL Check that the address is correct. (For example, did you enter “0” or “O”, “-” or “_”) c When accessing through the bookmark or page memo The address may have been changed or the link structure of the Web site may have been modified.
