Playing a CD You can also use rechargeable batteries, dry batteries and a car battery as a power source. 1. Connect your CD player. to an AC outlet 1 Connect the AC power adaptor. 2 Connect the headphones/earphones with remote control. Playing an 8-cm (3-inch) CD (for the customers having purchased JE.W, HK2, CN2 and E13 models) You cannot play an 8-cm CD on this CD player without using an adaptor. Make sure to attach an 8-cm CD adaptor to the CD before inserting it into the player. • Do not insert an 8-cm CD only into the slot. • Do not insert an 8-cm CD adaptor CSA-8 only into the slot. If you do, try to remove it by turning the slot side down and shaking the player. In some cases you will not be able to remove it.
3. Play a CD. Press u. Adjust the volume by pressing VOLUME + or –. Using the remote control The lever marked with .-u-> is the jog lever. Press or slide the lever to operate your CD player.
About the display • When you press u after changing the CD or turning off and on the player, the total number of tracks in the CD and total playing time appear for about two seconds. • During play, the track number and the elapsed playing time of the current track appear. • During play of a CD containing text information, the disc name, artist name and the elapsed playing time of the current track appear. For details, see “Displaying CD text information”.
Playback options You can enjoy various ways of playback using PLAY MODE and REPEAT/ENTER. Playing tracks repeatedly (Repeat play) You can play tracks repeatedly in normal, single, shuffle and PGM play modes. During playback, press REPEAT/ENTER. Playing a single track (Single play) During playback, press PLAY MODE repeatedly until “1” appears. Available features G-PROTECTION function Displaying CD text information The G-PROTECTION function has been developed to provide excellent protection against sound skipping while jogging. This function provides a higher level of shock protection than the traditional one. While jogging, be sure to hold your CD player with the i/REMOTE jack facing upward. There is no ON/OFF switch of the G-PROTECTION function on this CD player and its remote control.
Checking the remaining time on the CD and the number of tracks left You can check the remaining time on the CD and the number of tracks left using DISPLAY. Display on the remote control Emphasizing the bass sound (SOUND) You can emphasize the bass-boosted sound. Press SOUND to select “MB Bass)” or “MB .” (Mega “No indication” (Normal play) Information appears in this portion. MB MB “Track number” or “remaining tracks on the CD” appears. Press DISPLAY.
Protecting your hearing Locking the controls (AVLS) (HOLD) The AVLS (Automatic Volume Limiter System) function keeps down the maximum volume to protect your hearing. You can lock the controls on your CD player to prevent accidental button presses. Set AVLS to “LIMIT.” Slide HOLD in the direction of the arrow. CD player Remote control To turn off the AVLS function Set AVLS to “NORM.” CHG/HOLD lamp flashes while the HOLD function is working. Displayed when the HOLD function is working.
Connecting your CD player Connecting a stereo system You can listen to CDs through a stereo system and record CDs on a cassette tape and a MiniDisc. For details, see the instruction manual that comes with the connected device. Be sure to turn off all connected devices before making connections. Notes • Before you play a CD, turn down the volume of the connected device to avoid damaging the connected speakers. • Use the AC power adaptor for recording.
Using your CD player in a car You can use your CD player in a car by connecting it to the car cassette deck. You cannot use the car mount plate for this CD player. When you use your CD player in a car, install it securely in a location that does not interfere with your driving.
Connecting a power source You can use the following power sources: • Rechargeable batteries • AC power adaptor (see “Playing a CD”) • LR6 (size AA) alkaline batteries (battery case) 4 For the battery life and charging time of the rechargeable batteries, see “Specifications.” Connect the AC power adaptor to the EXT BATT/DC IN 4.5 V jack of your CD player and an AC outlet, then press x•CHG to start charging. If the AC power adaptor does not fit the AC outlet, use the AC plug adaptor.
To remove the rechargeable batteries Remove the batteries as illustrated below. Using dry batteries Make sure to use the supplied battery case. Use only the following dry battery type for your CD player: • LR6 (size AA) alkaline batteries Remove the cap of the battery case, and insert two LR6 (size AA) alkaline batteries by matching the 3 to the diagram outside the battery case and close the cap of the battery case. 2 Connect the battery case to the CD player.
Using dry batteries When to replace the batteries When the batteries become weak, “Lo batt” appears in the display with the beep sound. Replace both batteries with new ones. The batteries in the CD player and battery case are discharged simultaneously. Notes • Be sure to remove the AC power adaptor when attaching the battery case. • When using the rechargeable batteries and dry batteries together to extend power, use fully charged rechargeable batteries and new dry batteries.
Additional information On headphones/earphones Precautions On safety • Should any solid objects or liquid fall into the CD player, unplug it and have it checked by qualified personnel before operating it any further. • Do not put any foreign objects in the DC IN 4.5 V (external power input) jack. On the CD player • Keep the shutter of the CD player closed except when inserting or removing the CD so that the dust will not damage the player. • If the slot for inserting CD is soiled with dust, etc.
Troubleshooting Should any problem persist after you have checked these symptoms, consult your nearest Sony dealer.
