Getting Started Hooking up the system Perform the following procedure 1 to 5 to hook up your system using the supplied cords and accessories. AM loop antenna FM antenna 3 2 4 1 5 Left speaker Right speaker 1 Connect the speakers. 2 Connect the FM/AM antennas. Connect the speaker cords to the SPEAKER jacks as shown below. Set up the AM loop antenna, then connect it. Insert only the stripped portion.

Extend the FM lead antenna horizontally AM loop antenna L AM 3 Connect the video input jack of your TV to the VIDEO OUT jack with the supplied video cable. Hooking up the system (continued) To attach the speaker pads Attach the supplied speaker pads to the bottom of the speakers to stabilize the speakers and prevent them from slipping. When carrying this system Perform the following procedure to protect the CD mechanism. 1 Make sure that all discs are removed from the unit. 2 Hold down CD and then press ?/1 until “STANDBY” appears. When you release the buttons, “LOCK” appears. 3 Unplug the AC power cord.
Setting the time remote. Press DISPLAY repeatedly when the system is off. Proceed to step 5 when “CLOCK” appears in the display. Each time you press the button, the system switches cyclically as follows: 3 Press v or V repeatedly to select “SET CLOCK”. 4 Press ENTER. 5 Press v or V repeatedly to set the hour. 6 Press B. The minute indication flashes. 7 Press v or V repeatedly to set the minute. 8 Press ENTER.
CD/VIDEO CD Loading a CD/VIDEO CD 1 Press CD. 2 Press PLAY MODE repeatedly until the mode you want appears in the display. 1 Press Z OPEN/CLOSE. The disc tray opens. 2 Place a CD or VIDEO CD with the label side up on the disc tray. When you play a CD single (8 cm CD), place it on the inner circle of the tray. To insert additional discs, press DISC SKIP EX-CHANGE to rotate the disc tray. Select To play ALL DISCS (Normal Play) All CDs in the disc tray continuously.
To Do this Switch to CD function from another source Press DISC 1 – 3 (Automatic Source Selection). However, if a CD is used in a program, play does not start even if you press CD 1 – 3. Press Z OPEN/CLOSE. Exchange other CDs while playing Press DISC SKIP EX-CHANGE. Play repeatedly (Repeat Play) Press REPEAT during play until “REPEAT” or “REPEAT 1” appears. REPEAT*1: For all the tracks on the CD up to five times. REPEAT 1*2: For a single track only.

Playing a VIDEO CD — Normal Play/Shuffle Play/Repeat Play Other operations To Do this Cancel Program Play Press PLAY MODE repeatedly until “PROGRAM” and “SHUFFLE” disappear. Clear a track from the end Press CLEAR on the remote in stop mode. Clear the entire program Press x once in stop mode or twice during play. Tips • The program you made remains after Program Play finishes.

Using the on-screen display (continued) To switch language of on-screen display (Chinese model only) You can switch the messages in the on-screen display from Chinese to English. 1 Press SPECIAL MENU on the remote. 2 Press 4 on the remote. The messages switch from Chinese to English. To switch back to Chinese messages, repeat this operation. Locating a specific part of a disc — Time Search/Disc Digest/Track Digest The TV screen must be ON to use these functions.
Locating the track you want — Disc Digest You can select the track you want by viewing the first frame of each track. 9 different tracks can be displayed on the TV screen at one time. “2) DISC DIGEST”. The first frame of tracks 1 through 9 on the current disc are displayed. The sound of the first three seconds of each track on an audio CD plays, but there is no sound when using a VIDEO CD. 3 Press the numeric buttons (1 – 10/0) on the remote to select the track you want.
Resuming playback from the point you stopped a VIDEO CD — Resume Play The unit memorizes the point where you stopped the VIDEO CD so you can resume from that point. Resume Play is not canceled when you turn off the system. Resume Play is not available for an audio CD. 1 While playing a VIDEO CD, press x to stop playback. “RESUME” appears on your TV screen. If “RESUME” does not appear, Resume Play is not available. 2 Press hH (or nN on the remote).
Tuner Presetting radio stations You can preset up to 20 stations for FM and 10 stations for AM. 1 Press TUNER/BAND repeatedly to select “FM” or “AM”. 2 Press and hold + or – (or TUNING + or – Start over from step 1. After step 3, press . or > (or PRESET – or + on the remote) repeatedly to select the preset number you want to store the other station. You can preset a new station in the selected preset number.
Tape Listening to the radio Loading a tape — Preset Tuning Preset radio stations in the tuner’s memory first (see “Presetting radio stations” on page 19). 1 Press TUNER/BAND repeatedly to select “FM” or “AM”. 2 Press . or > (or press PRESET – or + on the remote) repeatedly to tune in the desired preset station. Preset number Frequency* * When only one station is preset, “ONE PRESET” appears in the display. To listen to non-preset radio stations Use manual or automatic tuning in step 2.

Recording to a tape — CD Synchro Recording/Recording Manually/Program Edit You can record from a CD, VIDEO CD, tape or radio. You can use TYPE I (normal) tapes. The recording level is adjusted automatically. Steps Recording from a CD/VIDEO CD (CD Synchro Recording) 1 2 3 Load a recordable tape into deck B. 4 Recording from a CD/VIDEO CD/tape/ radio manually Press CD. Press CD, TAPE A/B or TUNER/BAND. Load the CD/VIDEO CD you want to record.
Recording a CD by specifying track order 11 Press DIRECTION repeatedly to select — Program Edit 12 Press REC PAUSE/START. When programing, make sure the playing times for each side do not exceed the length of one side of the tape. 1 Load a CD and load a recordable tape into deck B. 2 Press CD. 3 Press PLAY MODE repeatedly until 4 Press one of DISC 1 – 3 to select a CD. To program all the tracks on a CD at once, proceed to step 5 with “AL” displayed. 5 Press .
Sound Adjustment Timer-recording radio programs (continued) 4 Set the time to start recording. Press v or V repeatedly to set the hour, then press B. The minute indication starts flashing. Press v or V repeatedly to set the minute, then press ENTER. 5 Repeat step 4 to set the time to stop recording. The start time appears, followed by the stop time, the preset radio station to be recorded (e.g., “TUNER FM 5”), then the original display appears. 6 Load a recordable tape into deck B.
To cancel the effect Press EFFECT ON/OFF repeatedly until “EFFECT OFF” appears in the display. Adjusting the graphic equalizer and storing Sound effect options “SURR” appears if you select an effect with surround effects. MUSIC EQ Effect ROCK POP JAZZ DANCE SOUL ORIENTAL Standard music sources You can adjust the sound by raising or lowering the levels of specific frequency ranges, then store up to three personal files (P FILE) in the memory.
Other Features Selecting the surround effect Press CINEMA SPACE on the remote repeatedly to turn the surround effect on or off. Each time you press the button, the display changes as follows: C.SPACE LOW* t C.SPACE MID* t C.SPACE HIGH* t SURR ON (on) t SURR OFF (off) * CINEMA SPACE is the surround effect for movies. Note When you select other sound effects, the surround effect will be canceled.
3 Press KARAOKE PON repeatedly to obtain the karaoke effect you desire. Each time you press the button, the display changes cyclically as follows: KARAOKE PON t MPX R*1 t MPX L*1 t Effect status*2 *1 Only for CD or VCD. *2 KARAOKE PON is canceled. To sing karaoke of multiplex CD, select “MPX R” or “MPX L”. 4 Start playing the music. 5 Adjust the microphone volume by turning MIC LEVEL. Notes • With some songs, vocals may not be canceled when you select “KARAOKE PON”.
Singing along: Karaoke (continued) To stop recording Press x. Tips • If acoustic feedback (howling) occurs, move the microphone away from the speakers or change the direction of the microphone. • If you want to record your voice through the microphone only, you can do so by selecting the CD function and not playing a CD. • When high level sound signals are input, the system automatically adjusts the recording level to prevent distortion of the recorded sound signal (Auto Level Control function).
Optional Components 8 Press ENTER. The type of timer (“DAILY 1” or “DAILY 2”), followed by the start time, stop time, and the music source appear, then the original display appears. 9 Press ?/1 to turn off the system. Hooking up the optional A/V components (continued) To Do this Make a digital recording from a CD to an MD Connect an optional optical cable. Make an analog recording on an MD Connect an optional audio cable. Make an analog recording from a VIDEO CD to a video tape Connect an optional audio cable from the MD/VIDEO (AUDIO) OUT jacks and the supplied video cable (or optional S VIDEO cable) from the VIDEO OUT (or S VIDEO OUT) jack to your VCR. Listen to the connected MD deck Press MD (VIDEO).
Additional Information To the video input of a TV Precautions On operating voltage Before operating the system, check that the operating voltage of your system is identical with the voltage of your local power supply. On safety Notes On placement • Place the system in a location with adequate ventilation to prevent heat build up. • Do not place the system in an inclined position.
Precautions (continued) On operation • If the system is brought directly from a cold to a warm location, or is placed in a very damp room, moisture may condense on the lens inside the CD player. Should this occur, the system will not operate properly. Remove the CD and leave the system turned on for about an hour until the moisture evaporates. • When you move the system, take out any discs. If you have any questions or problems concerning your stereo system, please consult your nearest Sony dealer.
Troubleshooting If you have any problem using this system, use the following check list. First, check that the power cord is connected firmly and the speakers are connected correctly and firmly. Should any problem persist, consult your nearest Sony dealer. The sound from the connected source is distorted. • If “VIDEO” appears in the display when you press MD (VIDEO), switch the display to “MD” (see “Hooking up the optional A/V components” on page 29). “0:00” (or “12:00 AM”) flashes in the display.
Troubleshooting (continued) Tape Deck The tape does not record. Speakers Sound comes from one channel or unbalanced left and right volume. • Check the speaker connection and speaker placement. Sound lacks bass. • Check that the speaker’s + and – jacks are connected correctly. • No tape in the cassette holder. • The tab has been removed from the cassette (see “To save a tape permanently” on page 32). • The tape has reeled to the end.
If other troubles not described above occur, reset the system as follows: 1 Unplug the power cord. 2 Plug the power cord back in. 3 Press x, ENTER, and ?/1 at the same time. 4 Press ?/1 to turn on the system. The system is reset to the factory settings. All the settings you made are cleared. Messages One of the following messages may appear or flash in the display during operation. NO DISC • There is no CD on the disc tray. OVER • You have reached the end of the CD.

Glossary Auto Pause An automatical pauses according to the signal encoded on the disc while playing a VIDEO CD. If the CD player does not resume play for a long time, press hH (or nN on the remote) to resume play manually. Menu Playback Playback using the menu screens recorded on VIDEO CDs with PBC functions.
